Get a behind-the-scenes look at the development process behind the Aetherblades in Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons

end of the dragons has been out for over a month now, and for those who’ve played through the story, the Guild Wars 2 team is beginning to detail the creative process behind the expansion’s new content. Story Design Lead Connor Fallon has a new (spoiler-filled) devblog, Developing the Aetherblades, about some of the design decisions behind the Aetherblades.

During concept and development, the team wanted to have a recurring faction in Cantha to connect to the larger world and the overall story being told. The choice fell on the Aetherblades, brought back from Living World Season 1 in 2013. Living World Season 1 will be rolling out for free soon.

A key sequence was one of the first things they prototyped:

“We had several moments in Guild Wars 2 where you and the Pact used airships against Elder Dragons; What if you took on an Elder Dragon with a bunch of airships instead? We storytellers love our thematic resonance and character arcs, but sometimes you gotta put your cool blast hat on!”

But as Fallon says, the value of choosing the Aetherblades went beyond a cool sequence. Fleeing back to The Mists after Scarlet attacked Lion’s Arch gave them an opportunity to fill in some of the gaps and make room for the lore. Since several characters had returned from the Mists changed, they decided that none would return from there unchanged.

So the team figured out how not only to change the Aetherblades, but also their ships, their armour, their armies and much more. Revenant powers? hmm For one of the game’s main villains, they brought back Ankka as a link to the past that would have repercussions. Mai Trin and Ivan were also there, and Fallon explains how the two were connected end of the dragons and why they were important.

Overall, it’s a deep dive into one of the most memorable parts of the expansion, and particularly rewarding for long-time players.
