‘Getting through the accident was the hardest thing ever’ – Marty Morrissey opens up on mother Peggy’s death

Broadcaster Marty Morrissey has revealed he’s having “good days and bad days” as he comes to terms with the death of his mother Peggy in a car crash last December.

Arty’s beloved mother Peggy, who was in her 90s, died in a traffic accident near her home in Co Clare late last year with the car she was driving.

The popular broadcaster said he’s found the house “particularly lonely” since Peggy’s death and “misses the phone calls every day.”

Marty, an only child to Martin and Peggy, said: “We were always close because there were only three of us growing up.

“It was tough getting over the accident, that was the hardest thing of all,” Marty told RTÉ Guide this week.

Marty had arranged to meet his mother in Inagh, halfway between Ennis and their home, before they drove to a hotel in Ennis, but by the time he reached the meeting point Peggy was nowhere to be seen, so Marty took the road west Clare came away on the accident.

Speaking on The Late Late Show, Marty recently commended the rescuers for their care and courage, the dignity with which they treated his mother and the kindness they showed him.

Marty says people’s love strengthened him in his grief.

“After that I got 120 or more measurement cards every day, mostly with letters, and those pages and pages really moved me and helped me,” Marty said.

Marty, in his grief, asked his mother to show him a sign that she was fine.

“In the church these two butterflies appeared. Maybe it was just my sadness, but it gave me comfort.

“I believe in life after death and that I’ll see mom and dad again and all the friends that are gone,” Marty said.

Marty admitted he was hesitant to speak out about his mother’s death as it was difficult, but said he could hear his mother’s voice in his head saying, “Take care of yourself Marty and just move on.” “

“I did that and I feel like she’s still with me now,” Marty said.
