Ghostbusters VR is “not a sequel to Afterlife” but offers many familiar elements

Ghostbusters VR will not be a direct sequel to the 2021 film Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Sony Pictures VR has confirmed to IGN.

Jake Zim, Senior VP of Virtual Reality at Sony Pictures Entertainment, told IGN that Ghostbusters VR will not be a continuation of the story explored in Afterlife, although there will be many familiar elements based on the film.

“Our game isn’t about the afterlife,” says Zim. “It’s not a sequel to Afterlife. It doesn’t go directly deeper into the stories. It’s a new story, it’s a new concept, but it ties in closely with a lot of things that people loved about Afterlife and the wider Ghostbusters world itself.”

Where Ghostbusters VR fits into the franchise’s timeline, Zim says there’s “a small temporal gap,” noting that players can envision the time period as “modern and maybe somewhat in the future.” Fans shouldn’t expect characters from the films to appear in Ghostbusters VR, with Zim noting that it’s “really important” for the development team to “move forward and create a whole storyline.”

Unlike the original films, which were set in New York City, Ghostbusters VR will be set in San Francisco. Zim says the developers will have a lot of fun with the setting, but will still try to fit it into the franchise’s universe.

“When we were talking about designing a game, we thought of a city, a place that could have a lot of really cool environments,” says Zim.

“When you think of San Francisco, when you think of earthquakes, its history, places, bridges, certain prisons, neighborhoods, the environment, the kind of people that live in San Francisco and the history that it has, it provided a lot of opportunity for nDreams to really have fun with it while still playing in the world of Ghostbusters.”

Ghostbusters VR doesn’t currently have a release date, but it’s expected to release on Meta Quest 2 at least.
