An inquest has revealed how Hannah Clarke’s brave daughter Aaliyah, 6, fought back cruel killer Rowan Baxter, who prompted her to leave her controlling husband, who later set his entire family on fire
A brave six-year-old girl fought back against her evil father before he burned her family to death, an inquest has found.
Hannah Clarke, 31, and her three children, Aaliyah, six, and Laianah, four, and their son, three-year-old Trey, were brutally killed by the monster Rowan Baxter two years ago while getting ready for school.
Baxter, 42, jumped into the family car in Brisbane, Australia and told his estranged wife: “I wanted to see my kids” and told her to “get out”.
He later took his own life after killing his family.
An inquest in Brisbane this week heard from family friend Varvara Meli, who said Aaliyah’s brave decision to stand up to her dangerous father was the “last straw” for Hannah Clarke, prompting her to end the decades-long to end an abusive relationship.
Ms Meli told the court how young Aaliyah was upset one morning when her cruel father came to pick her up from school. MailOnline reports.
The young girl, who was friends with Ms. Meli’s children, approached her and asked to use an adult phone, she recalled.
She said: “She had opened up to my girls during the day that she wasn’t looking forward to the afternoon.
“I didn’t ask, I just gave her the phone.”
Ms Meli told the inquest the call didn’t take long and Aalyah only called to tell her mother she was fine and would see her in the afternoon.
That brief phone call, and little Aalyiah’s actions to reassure her mother, was a turning point for Ms Clarke, who later told Ms Meli that her daughter’s awareness of the situation was the last straw that led to her eventually leaving from control of Baxter.
As the investigation began, Ms Clarke’s devastating last words were revealed.
Despite suffering burns on 97% of her body, the brave mother took the strength to tell paramedics and police at the scene what had happened.
The inquest heard Hannah tell the first paramedic at the scene, Stephanie Ring, “My babies are in the car, my kids are in the car. Why didn’t I just stay in the car with them?”
He had previously turned down an offer to share custody of his three children with Hannah before launching the horrific attack.
Baxter is said to have kidnapped his six-year-old daughter on Boxing Day last year, which allowed Mrs Clarke to get a Domestic Violence Order (DVO) against him.
On the opening day of the investigation, a neighbor described Hannah as “amazingly strong” as she tried to stop Baxter’s attack and save her children.
The neighbor said she heard her scream: “Call the police, he’s trying to kill me, he poured gasoline on me.”
CCTV footage also showed Baxter at a hardware store buying the canister used in the attack.
She was understood to have experienced increasing levels of violence and coercive control leading up to her death.
The investigation is also set to call witnesses, including counselors and police officers, who helped Hannah’s marriage collapse — as well as a laborer who took a call from Baxter 16 hours before his family’s murder in 2020.
It has also been revealed as the mother found a chilling note from her murderous partner in the weeks leading up to her death, which read: ‘You can’t screw up someone’s life like that and expect them to just take it.
“I can’t take it anymore, Hannah.
“Do you know how hard it is to go to bed every night without your kids? I wish you would have just tried.
“You ruined my life and I can’t go on. I hope it was all worth it for you and your family.
“I’ll finish your game. I don’t want to play anymore. That was never my intention.”
