Dublin TD Richard Boyd Barrett has thanked supermodel Bella Hadid for sharing one of his political posts on Instagram and told Independent.ie he was “glad to get in touch with another activist”.
he Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown TD has become one of just 728 people to follow the supermodel and activist on the social media platform, while he is now following her too.
It comes as Ms Hadid, who has over 50 million Instagram followers, followed Deputy Barrett and shared one of his posts last night.
The post, which dates back to January 18 this year, compared the levels of government funding to Ireland’s horse racing industry and to shelters for victims of domestic violence.
It says the government has earmarked €88 million for horse racing and just €30 million for domestic violence shelters.
“Did you know that the government gives more money to the horse and greyhound racing industry than to domestic violence havens? The Istanbul Convention to Combat Domestic Violence and Violence required one shelter for every 10,000 residents,” wrote the Dún Laoghaire TD in the post shared by Hadid.
“Overall, Ireland provides only 29 percent of the Istanbul target. 2,159 requests could not be fulfilled in 2020.
“And the government wants us to believe they care about women’s safety?”
It is not known how Ms Hadid, of Dutch and Palestinian descent, found the post of Deputy Boyd Barrett as he is over two months old, but a speech by the TD regarding Israel’s treatment of Palestinians went viral in early March and has been viewed more than a million times worldwide.
Mr. Boyd Barrett told Independent.ie that he was made aware of the connection last night and believes Hadid followed him about his party’s campaigns.
“I think it’s really nice that someone who has a lot of followers shares some of our campaign priorities,” he said.
“I suspect that the reason she followed me is because of our campaigning in Palestine because, as far as I know, she is a particular advocate for Palestine and has been very widely distributing some of the videos and speeches I’ve made about Palestine became international. So I guess that puts me on their radar.”
MP Boyd Barrett said it’s “good to get in touch with someone who thinks along the same lines” as his party and he hopes it could spark interest in the party’s politics among Instagram users and younger voters .
“Obviously, I hope it will spark interest among younger people and Instagram followers in some of PBP’s campaign priorities, which is a simple political message that people are moving forward in relation to many of the big issues the world is facing.” should stand for profit. Hopefully that’s an idea that gets more traction internationally,” he said.
Since joining the social media platform almost three years ago, Mr Boyd Barrett said he has received some “very strong reactions” to the content shared.
“It’s always good to reach new audiences with what we think is a progressive and important political message,” he added.
