Glasgow will be great for Eurovision, it has ‘joke’ Norton says

Veteran Eurovision commentator Graham Norton hailed Glasgow as a “fantastic venue” to host the competition after the city was shortlisted to host next year’s event.

lasgow and Liverpool were selected as the last two of seven possible cities across the UK to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in place of this year’s winner Ukraine.

The UK finished second in the competition and entered the host role after the competition organizers said it could not host the event in Ukraine due to the ongoing Russian invasion.

Speaking to STV’s News at Six on Tuesday, Norton said: “I think Glasgow would be a great place to have it.

“You have great locations, you have hotels, airports, trains and fun jokes.

“Every taxi driver in Glasgow will say: ‘Yes! Any!'”

Sam Ryder, the UK’s 2022 entrant and runner-up in the competition, was also asked by the Clyde 1 hosts to support Glasgow’s bid.

He said: “I’m Sam Ryder and I want Eurovision to be in Glasgow!”

And Lawrence Chaney, who won the second series of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK, and is from Glasgow, also supported the city, saying they had “crossed their legs”.

Councilor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “We are delighted that Glasgow has made it to the final two cities in the race to host Eurovision and the celebration of Ukraine next year.

“The competition is strong, but Glasgow has an unparalleled track record of successfully hosting major global events.

“Between that experience and expertise; Our renowned live music scene and one of the world’s leading entertainment venues at OVO Hydro – Glasgow has everything it takes to host a show the entire Eurovision family can be proud of. “

A decision by the contest’s organizers, the European Broadcasting Union, will be made “within weeks”. Glasgow will be great for Eurovision, it has ‘joke’ Norton says
