Lauren Laverne has pulled out of BBC coverage of the Glastonbury Festival after she shared the sad news that her mother had passed away

Lauren Laverne shared her grief over the death of her mother Celia Gofton in an emotional Instagram post in which she said the family was “deeply heartbroken”.

The 44-year-old BBC 6Music breakfast presenter was due to cover the Glastonbury Festival on the BBC this weekend but she has now told followers of her mother’s grieving passing.

In the post, the DJ expressed gratitude to “the kindest and most tenacious person I have ever met”, in which she shared several photos of her mother along with details of her life. .

Lauren began her post on Instagram: “Yesterday I lost my mother, Celia. She is the best, kindest and most tenacious person I have ever met.”

She went on to write about her mother’s life: “Born among nine children, she was a pacifist and master persuader. She passed 11+ and went to grammar school, where changed the direction of our family forever, met my dad at 16 and fell in love with him every single day of her life.

“She ran the only reggae club night in NE and told me that when I was young in the 60s, I felt like Mr Tambourine Man’s saying ‘to dance under the diamond sky with one hand waving. free’.

“She worked as a seamstress and casino dancer (also making costumes for the troupe) to cover her college education and became a great teacher, eventually managing all of Sunderland’s colleges. “

Lauren went on to detail how her mother was politicized: “Somewhere she got me and my brother and became political (she once kicked someone from the BNP down the aisle) in our garden with a pin in one hand and me in the other ) protested at Greenham Common and eventually became a city councilor.

“She’s happy to help people, especially people like her who know what it’s like to grow up without.

“She’s been watching historical documentaries for so many decades that when we met historian Michael Wood, they chatted like colleagues.”

Lauren went on to say what a mother and grandmother she has been.

The TV presenter continued: “She loves children and is the most devoted and respectful mother and grandmother you can meet. But she also knows that mother is a verb as well as a noun. and has nurtured so many others along the way who needed love and support throughout her life.

“She connected everywhere she went, including with the incredible teams at UCLH who took care of her – and us – at the end of her life. Thank you for everything. We are all deeply saddened to lose her.

“She just let the kids spend their Glastonbury money and was looking forward to seeing Paulie (as he was always known in our house – her favorite Beatle) tonight.

“She’s been a fan since she saw him at the Sunderland Empire in 1963 (and then met him afterwards with me – he was just adorable for her). , I love you forever Thank you for your wonderful life I don’t know what I would do without you but I will try to make it enjoyable and you will be in my heart , always XXX”

I will forever see Celia sitting hugging cuppa on your sofa, next to your dad, watching our kids play on the carpet and listening to our news, cheering us on when we need it, hold our hands and sit in solidarity when we need it more. She had so much love, kindness and patience to give and we grew richer in the time we got to know and love her.

Lauren shared her thanks on Twitter after the tributes came out on her Instagram post.

She tweeted: “I lost my mom yesterday. I posted a bit of her on Instagram because I wanted to acknowledge her amazing life, so that’s it. Here, I just I want to thank my truly incredible family, friends and colleagues for their support – especially lately. X”

Lauren is one of the main presenters for the BBC’s coverage of the Glastonbury Festival this weekend and the broadcaster announced last night that she would not be appearing for “personal reasons”.
