Smoking revelers at the Glastonbury Festival were caught briefly when some bars abruptly switched to cash payments on Friday night.

Many stopped taking cards during one of the busiest times of the evening when one of the bars in the hospitality area began turning away players who wanted to pay by card at 8pm.

But they weren’t the only venue to make the switch, Bristol Live reports.

Festival-goers on the Pyramid Stage also ran into trouble during Sam Fender’s 8:15 p.m. set when the bars were cash-only.

They told the media this was because the WiFi was “down”, but nearby food trucks were still working as usual.

It wasn’t long before most of the nearby liquor outlets put up cardboard signs saying “CASH ONLY” – and the problem wasn’t limited to this part of the campus.

At Silver Hayes, bars faced the same problem.

A reveler who tried to buy a drink near the Sonic stage said: “There was chaos in some bars.

“People would get to the front of the lines and place orders only to be told they weren’t taking tickets.

“A lot of bars aren’t near ATMs so we had to walk 15 minutes just to get cash and buy a drink and by this point we were back in a 15 minute queue.

“I don’t understand why the bars don’t take cards when almost every other takeaway here allows you to use them.”

Another festival-goer explained: “I was looking for a drink in the Silver Hayes area of the festival, whereupon I was told that all the bars in the area were cash only as the card machines weren’t working.

“Apparently this was a problem with the WiFi which had been a problem in the days before.

“That wouldn’t normally be a big problem, but the nearest ATMs were closed, meaning the nearest ATM was on the other side of the pyramid stage.

“Not ideal if the act I wanted was to start in 10 minutes. I was angry.”

Most players didn’t notice the change until they were at the top of the queue and got nothing.

Almost all ATMs on Glastonbury’s grounds charge a fee for withdrawals, and revelers are understandably reluctant to carry large sums of money or leave them in an unsafe tent.
