Glenn Whelan was sacked by Bristol Rovers despite playing a role in their promotion success.

he Ireland veteran made 33 appearances for Rovers last season under manager Joey Barton, his former team-mate, and Barton had spoken of his hopes of keeping Whelan for another year after a successful season in the second division.

But the club today released Whelan, 38, as one of the 13 players.

“We would like to thank all the players who have left the club and wish them every success in the future,” Rovers said in a statement.

Former Irish teammates Callum O’Dowda (Bristol City), Wes Hoolahan (Cambridge United), Kieren Westwood (QPR) and Anthony Pilkington (Fleetwood Town) have also been sacked since the end of last season.
