GMB: Shevchenko was asked about Chelsea fans singing Abramovich’s name

Good Morning Britain fans criticized co-hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway’s questions to Ukrainian football legend Andriy Shevchenko during Friday’s show.

The 45-year-old former Chelsea striker has appeared on the ITV show after announcing he will raise refugee children at his home in London and assist 150 Ukrainians to settle in the UK.

But when the ITV co-hosts raised some questions about Roman Abramovich, who now has all of his assets including Chelsea FC frozen after being placed on the UK sanctions list, Viewers were not impressed.

Kate started the interview by telling the Ballon D’Or winner: “You’re a football legend, but you’ll be known to everyone during your time at Chelsea, when Roman Abramovich buys you in. Maybe. , you’ve worked with him, he’s been a big supporter of you, you’re a great signing.”

She continued: “That is the heart of the horror of this – you are Ukrainian, your family is in danger, but Roman Abramovich is Russian.

“How do you feel about your old club and the stresses of losing him from the club?”

Shevchenko stressed that the London football club’s history cannot be “cancelled”, adding: “It’s an incredible club and especially because it has incredible fans. I know it’s a tough time for them, but I’m sure they’ll get through it.”

He then continued: “I have the opportunity to urge all the fans to play your part, do whatever you can to help the people of Ukraine, they need peace.”

Kate then replied: “We will resume your campaign for a moment, but if you were still playing at Chelsea and heard the fans chanting Abramovich’s name, how would you feel?”

But Shevchenko didn’t seem to want to get in touch with Abramovich’s controversy and replied: “I know in Russia there are a lot of people who oppose the war. Speak out. Go on the street. Send Message. The world wants peace”.

But the presenters appeared to want to emphasize the point, with presenter Ben later asking: “Do you want the Chelsea fans to not shout Abramovich’s name or are there mitigating circumstances that you feel?”

But Shevchenko brought the matter back to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, saying: “I am here to send a message around the world and also to touch the hearts of the people who support my country.

“To help bring peace to my country, because the situation is very difficult. [They’re] not even open humanitarian corridors.

“I know families that have been underground for 20 days – without food or water. They need medical supplies. They need help.”

Viewers of Good Morning Britain were unimpressed with the exchange, with many taking to Twitter to label the line of questions “insensitive”.

One person wrote: “Very leading questions, you can say Shevchenko doesn’t want to answer stop trying to pressure him. Where is your ingenuity? ”

A second wrote: “He clearly doesn’t want to talk about Abramovich – let it go!” as another said: “This man is traumatized and you are trying to get him to talk about Abramovich? Exactly! ”

“He clearly doesn’t want to talk about Abramovich – leave it!”

Another viewer wrote: ‘His family is in a war zone, I wouldn’t think Chelsea would be high on his list.

One social media user wrote: “Good thing he doesn’t take bait from Ben and Kate, that’s the last thing he’ll say so shut up!” as another posted: “You are an absolute fool. Bring in Shevchenko, whose family in Ukraine is in jeopardy, but all they do is grill him about how he feels about Chelsea. ”

Another tweeted: “Don’t ask him about Abramovich, he clearly doesn’t want to talk about him – insensitive…”
