Tensions heated up on the set of Good Morning Britain when guests clashed with presenter Adil Ray.
Hosts Adil and Kate Garraway joined Kate Smurthwaite and Dr Zoe Strimpel to discuss TfL’s roll out of posters against “intrusive staring”.
The campaign aims to send a strong message to offenders that sexual harassment is not tolerated, although some have questioned how helpful the posters are and whether staring Is staring punished or not?
Adil started the debate by asking, “What’s so bad about staring, Kate?”
She replied, “Well, this is exactly the problem.
“Of course, there are a lot of people staring and they are completely innocent. No one would suggest that you would stare at a seagull out the window and someone would say, ‘That gull doesn’t need your attention’.
“What we’re talking about is when someone is intentionally staring at you, maybe breathing heavily, while touching their leg, licking their lips -“
Adil interjected when he said it was “adding a few things to” the message and then gave an example of a time he had stared at someone he was attracted to.
He said: “I had a situation where, in 2008, I was at the airport alone and I was at the baggage claim and I saw a really attractive woman on the other side and we came across each other and we ended up looking at each other.
“We were staring at each other!”
Wondering if it was an intrusive look or a “super welcoming” look, he continued: “I don’t know! I’ve been staring at her and waiting for her to look at me. she looked at me and when we walked out we ended up being next to each other and i asked for her number… we ended up going for a holiday dinner and it started with a stare stare.”
Kate asked him: “Are you worried that you might be accused of staring?”
Adil replied: “I think I can, I can’t do it.”
She went on to accuse him of moderating the argument, saying: “I think that’s why we’re talking about harassment.
“Also, I think it’s a bit like… when we talk about people being sexually harassed on public transport, it’s out of breath to say, ‘Wow, I looked at someone who did. there and it’s all pretty cool’.
“Because obviously, that’s not what we’re talking about.”
