GMB: Ukrainian students discuss defending their country

Good Morning Britain viewers were full of praise for a 19-year-old Ukrainian student who watched the show on Tuesday.

Susanna Reid and co-host Adil Ray arrived in western Ukraine around 6:30 a.m. to speak with Valentina Butenko.

The British-Ukrainian student was caught up in the Russian invasion of Ukraine after going there to visit her father.

Valentina has spent the past few days trying to help as many locals as she can, including driving a friend to the Moldova border so they can escape.

Valentina replied: “Risk is a relative thing. The real risk for me is that my country disappears.

“The real risk for me is that there is a genocide against my people that will not be stopped and that Ukrainian culture will be completely terminated.”

She admitted: “Of course, I am extremely scared. Like I said before there is no place in Ukraine that is safe right now because there is a monster that is ready to bomb civilian buildings without reason. do.

“But for me, personal risk, that doesn’t mean anything compared to the other risks that are out there.

“I think every person in their life has some things that define our lives. There are some things that make our lives worth living and give us a reason to be here.

“For us right now, it’s our brotherhood and sisterhood, it’s our solidarity, it’s our love for freedom and democracy,” continued Valentina. .

“I’m willing to pay any price to protect that. My safety is secondary to protecting the things that make my life worth living.”
