We’re far from the days of “Thrift Stores” and “Same Love”, but Macklemore training just continued chugging. The Grammy Award-winning Seattle rapper released his first single of 2022 on Friday (July 21).
Titled “Chant”, new menu features Tones and I and debuted with a music video co-directed by Macklemore and Jake Maraw. Macklemore began recommending the song two weeks ago (July 6) with a black-and-white Instagram post of his writing the phrase “1. Chant” on the whiteboard.
Prior to the song’s release, Macklemore teased “Chant” with several excerpts on TikTok and Instagram. “I was supposed to be a famous ring artist / Now I have too many rings and not enough fingers,” he raps on the gospel-inspired track.
“Chant” appears before Macklemore’s upcoming time on the road with Imagine Dragon Tales. The two artists will perform in stadiums and arenas across North America for the band’s Mercury tour. The single also introduced a new era of Macklemore’s music; multi-platinum multi-platinum rapper Robberies This year. That blockbuster album spawned several Billboard Hot 100 hits including “Can’t Hold Us” (No.1), “Same Love” (No 11) and certified “Thrift Shop” (No.1) Diamond.
Macklemore has also had his share of solo success since he and Ryan Lewis took a musical hiatus as a duo. In 2017, he failed Gemini peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and produced Hot 100 hits like Skylar Grey-featuring “Glorious” (No. 49) and Kesha-on saving the “Good Old Days” (No. 48). His “Chant” collaborators, Tones and I, had a big breakout year in 2020 as “Dance Monkey” skyrocketed to #4 on the Hot 100.
