God alone makes known to man what is true and what is false

I agree with Sarah Carey (Irish Independent, March 19) when she says that those who disagree with traditional Catholic dogma or beliefs may join another religion and perhaps join many of the existing “social justice” organizations should engage.

Contrary to modern thinking, the church is not a social movement but an institution inspired by divine origin and guidance.

Christ Himself said, “He was not here to bring peace, but a sword…”!

This illustrates the conflict that exists between adherence to the principles of Christian religious doctrine and those secular values of the unbelieving modern world. In most cases these are not compatible.

The authority of Scripture is often belittled as “of things to be rejected in modern times.” Christians believe God alone makes known to man what is true and false in areas of sexual morality and general conduct.

Recent scandals in the church reflect the reality of human frailty, not genuine and repentant Christian forgiveness or communion!

What amuses me is that the arguments for change are against Christian structures, but not against religions such as Islam, Judaism or any other faith.

Spring Equinox is a timely reminder that it’s good to be alive

Today’s The vernal equinox heralds a time of rebirth, fertility and brightness. It marks the sun crossing the equator from south to north. At the equinox, the sun shines directly on the equator because daylight and darkness are almost equal at 12 hours each.

The anticipation of life outdoors drives me. Daylight Saving Time begins next Sunday, March 27th at 1am when clocks go forward by one hour – “Spring forward and fall back”. The days are noticeably longer. The animals mate and produce offspring. Birds sing and build nests. No one sings louder than the nightingale, which rules the Ukrainian sky with its powerful and beautiful song of defiance. The trees are blooming sweetly.

Warmth, growth and green return. The sunflower, the national flower of Ukraine, grows around the world as a symbol of connection with the country and its people.

The Spring Equinox restores my energy after the cold, dark winter. I appreciate how good it is to live and live in a beautiful country. It makes you want to exercise, do sports and live outdoors. My thoughts turn to swimming in the sea at Fenit, hiking at Banna Strand, days at the races and anticipating a successful season for the Austin Stacks and Kerry football teams.

But above all the resilient people in the Ukraine are dominating my thoughts this spring. I pray that Russia will heed Pope Francis’ impassioned plea to “stop, in the name of God, this unacceptable armed aggression and massacre.”

Man-made illusions used to define people’s beliefs

As atheists and many scientists wrestle with the possibility that something more intelligent than themselves exists, like religious people, they rely on man-made sensory interpretations of existence to define their beliefs.

Everything named, however, relies on something else to name it. Naming things gives humans the illusion of a certain knowledge, but it is only a local linguistic means of communication relevant in the solar system as defined by the human senses.

Our naming and measurement are no more than Robinson Crusoe’s markings on a stick.

It’s no real surprise that the English didn’t do us any favours

A character, The English haven’t done the Irish much favors for over 800 years. No wonder they couldn’t do us any favors for over 80 minutes.
