FANS have been eagerly awaiting the release of God of War Ragnarök for the past four years, and the moment is almost here.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or completely new to the series, it can always help to know what to expect.
These tips are completely spoiler-free so you can relax as you read.
If you’re looking forward to God of War Ragnarök, here’s what you need to do to get ready.
Keep the spoilers to yourself
While that’s true of any story-heavy game, it’s doubly true of God of War Ragnarök.
The God of War reboot is mostly linear, leading to an explosive ending. However, the sequel is full of twists and turns that are best experienced blindly.
That means you shouldn’t watch story spoilers if you want the best experience, and you definitely shouldn’t share them and ruin the experience for others.
Curiosity is the key
As with the 2018 release, the key to getting the most out of God of War Ragnarök is exploring every nook and cranny.
Whenever you are free to roam, try to walk every path you see.
There are loads of side quests to find, as well as other mysteries and surprises to uncover.
As you move through each area, you’ll change and shift things, which means there may now be paths you didn’t have access to before.
You can come back to all of this after the main story, so go back and explore anything you missed.
Don’t leave your boy behind
God of War Ragnarok combat relies more on your partner in battle than in the 2018 game.
Each fight has very little downtime as you make sure everyone is doing their job.
There are several new types of arrows with different effects that change the amount of damage dealt depending on the target.
If you figure this out early in the fight, things will go a lot smoother.
Use Kratos’ rage
There are multiple types of Spartan Rage in the upcoming game, which previously only granted stronger attacks and restored health.
That has changed and now The Rage brings more tactical elements to the game’s combat system.
You’ll have to work this out on your own so we avoid spoilers, but you’ll quickly learn how best to switch between the different types.
Spartan Rage can also be selected from the start menu so you don’t lose precious seconds in battle.
Learn to parry
Dodging is very tempting when surrounded by a group of enemies, but parrying is a much more effective technique.
Parries briefly stun enemies, leaving them free to attack.
You’ll only be out for a few seconds, but it’s worth trying this technique to speed up encounters.
There’s also a new Shield Bash ability to interrupt attacks when the enemy is circled in blue.
Upgrade your runes
This one is easy to miss, but you can upgrade your rune attacks with the amount of experience.
Upgrades not only increase your attacks, but can also add additional abilities.
Use the touchpad to open the menu, then select the weapon you want to upgrade the rune for.
There will be a series of attacks here, and you can upgrade any of them by pressing R2.
Level 2 requires 3,250 XP for the Rune Light Attacks and 4,250 XP for the Rune Heavy Attack, and Level 3 ranges from 9,000 to 10,500 XP.
