GOOGLE Maps is helping people reduce their fuel consumption as the cost of living hits a crunch.
Google announced yesterday that it is extending the eco-friendly routing option of its digital navigation tool to Europe.
The feature, which launched in the US and Canada last year, shows drivers routes that use less energy.
This means that ingestion will use less petrol or diesel if you’re in a gas-guzzling vehicle, or less electricity if you’re driving an electric car.
That could come in handy for those of us trying to tighten our wallets as petrol prices hit record highs in the UK.
Eco-friendly routes are displayed alongside the fastest routes calculated by Google Maps, giving a choice of one or the other.
They are recognizable in the app as routes marked with a leaf label.
Google said the new routing option will roll out to users in “almost 40” European countries starting Wednesday.
This includes Great Britain and Ireland as well as France, Poland and Spain.
Eco-Routing has also been updated, allowing users to choose what type of fuel their car runs on.
This means Maps can find the most fuel-efficient route for your vehicle type and provide more accurate estimates of how much energy you will save.
For example, drivers with diesel cars are directed onto high-speed highways where their engines are most efficient.
Those in EVs, on the other hand, will be sent to surface roads where they can make better use of regenerative braking.
The system is based on data from the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the European Environment Agency.
This is combined with driving trends from Google Maps and fed into an algorithm to determine the most efficient routes.
Google stressed that it will continue to show drivers the fastest route available if they prefer.
To adjust eco-friendly route settings, users can tap their profile picture on Google Maps.
Next, go to Settings > Navigation Settings, then scroll down to Route Options.
Users can tap the Prefer fuel-efficient routes option to toggle fuel-efficient routing on or off.
Google claimed that introducing greener routes in the US and Canada saved 100,000 cars in CO2 emissions.
