PUZZLE game Wordle was Google’s most popular search engine in the UK this year, it turns out.
The daily teaser, which gives players six tries to guess a five-letter word, beat the World Championship to second place.
Queen Elizabeth’s death ranked third in Google’s Year in Search statistics, followed by the Ukraine war and Covid lateral flow testing.
Man United’s Mason Greenwood, who faces rape charges, Russia, Wordle Alternative Quordle, US serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and Johnny Depp complete the top ten.
The most searched news event was the death of the Queen, then Ukraine and monkeypox.
The best-researched film was Disney’s Encanto, with Stranger Things leading the way for television.
The World Cup aroused the greatest interest in the sport.
Google builds its lists by identifying search queries with high traffic increases over a longer period of time compared to the previous year.
Google News Lab’s Matt Cooke said: “This year’s list reflects the arc of emotions experienced.
“Among extreme ups and downs, including national grief and geopolitical instability, it’s humbling to see a game like Wordle find solace alongside family favorites like Encanto.”
