Google’s rampant tracking affects about two billion users of devices running its Android operating software.

It also affects hundreds of millions of iPhone users worldwide who rely on Google to search for maps or maps.

Storing your minute-by-minute trips carries privacy risks and has been used by police to locate suspects.

For the most part, Google responds first about asking for permission to use your location information.


An app like Google Maps will prompt you to allow access to the location if you use it for navigation.

The Silicon Valley giant has come under attack in recent years for its invasive location-tracking practices.

In the past, it has been accused of recording people’s movements even when they explicitly asked not to go through Google’s privacy settings.

Following a 2018 investigation by the Associated Press, the company made it easier to find and delete your data. You just need to know where to look.

Snooping by the search giant can be blocked by jumping into your settings.

You can even ask the company to delete all the location and search data it has about you to make sure your move is nobody else’s business but yours.

Turning off and removing tracking is a multi-step process.

How to turn off Google location tracking

If you want to completely turn off location tracking, you will have to follow these steps.

first. Open Google.com on your smartphone or desktop browser.

2. Sign in to your Google account by tapping the top right icon.

3. Select that icon and then Manage your Google account.

4. In the Privacy & Personalization box, select Manage your data and privacy.

5. Scroll down to Activity controls and tap Manage your activity controls.

6. In the box named Web and App Activity, slide the toggle to Turn off.

7. Disclosure will explain what disabling this setting will do before you choose Pause.

How to delete old location data

Along with disabling tracking, you’ll need to delete your location data in the past.

first. Open Google.com on your smartphone or desktop browser.

2. Sign in to your Google account by tapping the top right icon.

3. Select that icon and then Manage your Google account.

4. In the Data & Privacy box, select Manage your data and privacy.

5. Scroll down to Activity controls and tap Manage your activity controls.

6. Option History management, will open a map and the corresponding timeline. Click Trash in the bottom right corner of the map to clear your history.

7. Disclosure will explain what disabling this setting will do before you confirm that you want Delete.

Prevent Google from tracking web and app activity

first. Open Google.com on your smartphone or desktop browser.

2. Sign in to your Google account by tapping the top right icon.

3. Select that icon and then Manage your Google account.

4. In the Data & Privacy box, select Data From Applications & Services You Use.

5. Scroll down to Activity controls and tap Manage your activity controls.

6. In the box named Web and App Activity, slide the toggle to Turn off.

7. Disclosure will explain what disabling this setting will do before you choose Pause.

Clear Google web and app data

first. Open Google.com on your smartphone or desktop browser.

2. Sign in to your Google account by tapping the top right icon.

3. Select that icon and then Manage your Google account.

4. In the Data & Privacy box, select Data From Applications & Services You Use.

5. Scroll down to Activity controls and tap Manage your activity controls.

6. In the box named Download or delete your data, you can delete all collected data – and you can choose to back it up first if needed.
