THOUSANDS of Android apps could disappear from view due to security concerns.

Google is cracking down on lazy developers who haven’t bothered to update their apps in years, putting millions of devices at risk.

The Google Play Store is crammed full of old applications that remain unimproved as new versions of Android emerge.

Apps that don’t keep up with the times can become buggy and full of security holes that hackers like to exploit.

Now Google has decided to take a big stand and hide all the oldies.

Any applications that have not been updated within two years of the release of the latest Android operating system are shunned from view in the Google Play Store.

But the strict new rule doesn’t come into effect until November, giving techies plenty of time to pull together.

However, users who have downloaded objectionable apps in the past can still find and reinstall them.

If you’re still using old apps that have gone through years without updates, you might want to reconsider using them.

“The reason is simple,” the tech giant said in a blog entry.

“Users with the latest devices or those who are dealing with Android updates expect to take full advantage of all the privacy and security protections Android has to offer.

“The good news is that the vast majority of apps on Google Play already comply with these standards.

“With other apps, we know this requires extra attention, so we’re giving developers early notice and allocating resources for those who need it.”

As part of several tightened rules announced Thursday, Google also said it would start blocking apps with content that isn’t “globally appropriate” from some areas where it’s considered objectionable, while they are allowed to stay in places where they are not.
