Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a longtime ally of Donald Trump, made clear on Thursday where he stands on the former president’s 2024 campaign.

“We have to find an alternative,” Cornyn told reporters, according to The Dallas Morning News. “I think President Trump’s time has passed and the most important thing for me is that we have a candidate who can actually win.”

“It all boils down to eligibility,” said Corynyn, who pointed out that “there is no price for coming second in an election.”

Cornyn indicated that Trump, the current front runner in the Republican race, doesn’t understand “that in a general election you have to reach out to voters outside of your base.”

“There is no doubt that President Trump has some enthusiastic supporters in his base,” the senator added. “That works well for him in a Republican primary, but not well when you need to boost his appeal in a general election.”

“I just want to win and we need a candidate who can win,” he added.
