Gordon Ramsay has admitted he is delighted that the Covid pandemic has shut down bad restaurants that take advantage of “prime locations”.

The TV chef, 55, said the past two years have been “devastating” for the hospitality industry – but the upside is that “the crap is gone now”.

When asked if he meant specific chains, he told the Radio Times: “Well, just assholes in a prime position and taking advantage because they’re in a great location and they have the cadence.

“But now we’ve wiped the slate clean, which is good.”

Ramsay said he now expects the quality of food in the restaurant industry to continue to improve.

“Customers have gotten so much smarter in the last two years,” he said.

“They know a lot more about food than ever before and made their own sourdough so it taught everyone (in the restaurant industry) to up their game.

“Lift. Your. Game. It wiped the arrogance out of the industry.”

Ramsay also defended his lockdown trip to his holiday home in Cornwall, saying it has bought him some valued time with his children.

He said: “God knows why we took so much shit from the Cornish.

“We lived down there; We just haven’t been down there in a long time. We didn’t sneak down there at all.

“We got there at the right time and had an absolutely amazing time. And such a time – we’re never coming back.

“When the kids went missing again, I didn’t want it to end — as a father, not as a chef.”

When asked if he could follow in his daughter Tilly’s footsteps onto the dance floor at Strictly Come Dancing, he said: “Not a chance. I have size 15 feet and they weren’t made for a dance floor let me tell you.

“They asked me to do a Christmas special with Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix.

“But I would like to do it. Secretly I would like to. I’ve always wanted to dance. There is something so great about the rumba, the samba, the foxtrot, the tango…

“I don’t know. I might ask the BBC if I could do that next year. Tilly would kill me, by the way. But the only thing that would make me a little nervous is all that tight lycra, sequins and pants.”

The full interview with Ramsay is now available on the Radio Times.
