Govee Glide Hexa Light Panel review

I have to admit that I’ve never really thought about adapting technologies. I’m a practical person; If it works functionally, I’m pretty happy. However, over the past year, the allure of customization, from keycaps to office lighting, has become increasingly enticing. So when the good folks at Govee sent me the Glide Hexa Light Panels, I was more than a little excited.

After a week of installing and using these panel lights, I must confess that I am more than a little in love with everything the Glide Hexa Lights have to offer. With so many features, full Google Assistant support, and ease of use, there’s not much here not to like. However, the question remains, is this the best option for any gamer looking to upgrade their office setup? Grab a coffee, sit back and let’s find out in our review of the Govee Glide Hexa Light Panels.

Shining example of quality

Out of the box, the Glide Hexa Light Panels feel premium. Everything from the packaging to the build quality is carefully thought out. The 10 included light panels are a fairly flexible plastic that still feels durable. Each comes with a pre-installed adhesive strip on the back for easy mounting. Along with the panels there are 10 strip connectors that are used to daisy chain the lights together, as well as a controller and power supply.

Each component feels solid and connects easily to every part of the panel system. As for the lighting in each panel, you have full access to the RGB lighting spectrum. More impressive, however, is the use of RGBIC lighting. RGBIC differs from standard RGB lighting in that multiple colors can be illuminated simultaneously on the same strip. In practice it creates a nice lighting experience for the user and really helps the Govee Glide Hexa Light Panels shine brighter than the competition.

In addition, this IC (Independent Chip) control enables a much more dynamic lighting experience. With each panel capable of displaying multiple colors, the customization options expand dramatically. Finally, RGBIC lights are much brighter than standard RGB lights. Seriously, I can easily light up my entire office with nothing more than these ten panels. The whole system looks and feels good.

plug and play

As with all lighting systems, setup can affect or detract from the experience. With the Govee Glide Hexa Light Panels, setup is a breeze. The Govee app (linked above) makes the entire setup process easy, literally walking you through every step of the process. After creating a login for the app, you will be prompted to select the product you are installing. Once selected, the setup process takes over from there. You can choose a suggested theme or create your own right in the app. Once selected, you will be guided through each step of the process, right down to connecting each jumper wire.

It was by far the easiest setup I’ve worked with so far. The included alignment tool and mini bubble level make it easy to keep things lined up and straight, and the pre-applied adhesive strips mean there are no nails or mounting holes in your wall. For those worried about the paint on your walls, I actually took one of the extra strips of adhesive and stuck it to my wall when I first received the panels. A week later I was able to peel it off easily without damaging my wall.

Additionally, each panel light can be individually removed from the wall while the mounting bracket remains attached. This makes replacing a panel or jumper exceptionally easy and quick. The only part of this whole installation that I would have liked would have been the power cord for the lights. This isn’t a criticism of the Glide Hexa Lights themselves, but of panel lights in general. Regardless of how you install it, there is still a power cord hanging from your lights. I appreciated that the back of each light had wall contact points so I could at least tuck away the excess cord and center it with the design. Despite this minor criticism, I was impressed with the entire setup process.

light it up

I mention that the setup process is a breeze. The same design philosophy carries over to the operation of the Glide Hexa system. That’s not to say it’s lacking in functionality and features. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The Govee app is chock-full of features and functions that the Hexa Light Panels can display (more on that in a moment). What’s simple here is how easy it is to navigate, set up, and customize the light panels to suit your needs. I’ve used quite a few smart lights over the past few years and this app is by far the easiest to use.

Regarding the features and functions of the Hexa Light Panels, I have to say that I am once again very impressed. All the standard features like music playback, color adjustments, and brightness are there and taken care of. But even these basic functions were treated first class. When it comes to music playback, everything is there from microphone sensitivity to sync options (internal microphone or the Music app on your phone). You can choose from color schemes and sync styles to pattern direction. It’s a really robust system, and that’s just music syncing.

There’s also a full-featured color mode that allows for individual panel selection, creating color schemes based on a few option selections, and space to save your own custom builds. There’s also a Scene tab that lets you set a color and pattern scheme based on a mood or a setting.

Because it’s a smart system, you’ll also find full access to a timer system for turning the system on and off. There are four schedulers that give you complete control over the time and day of the week. In addition, there is a wake-up and sleep function that slowly makes the light brighter or darker, depending on the configuration.

The final feature I want to highlight is the inclusion of Google Assistant and Alexa support. I was able to set this up quickly using Google Assistant and had no problem using voice commands from my phone to control the lighting experience. It’s a nice little extra that makes these lights look premium once again.

Final Thoughts

The Govee Glide Hexa Light Panels are some of the nicest I’ve worked with. Everything from the build quality to the installation process is impressive. The RGBIC lights in each panel help set the system apart from other hex panel lighting systems. Throw a really impressive list of features and functionality into an easy-to-use app and you have a recipe for success.

The only concern I have in recommending this system has nothing to do with the system, it has to do with the price tag. The price of CND249.99 will definitely be a barrier to entry for many players hoping to spice up their current setup, especially considering there are cheaper (albeit inferior) options out there.

However, I have to say that the Hexa Light Panels really are in a class of their own and offer some really unique and quality features. If you’re in the market to upgrade your setup and can handle the price, the Govee Glide Hexa Light Panels are a serious contender and worth the investment.
