Government poised to easily defeat Sinn Féin’s no-confidence motion as two stray Green Party TDs come back on board

The government is poised to easily defeat Sinn Féin’s no-confidence motion later in the evening after two stray Greens TDs got back on board.

easa Hourigan and Patrick Costello – who previously lost the whip in May for voting in favor of a Sinn Féin motion – will join their coalition counterparts in voting against the motion, sources said.

The couple backed a Sinn Féin proposal calling for the new national maternity hospital to be built on public land, but will now oppose another Sinn Féin proposal which, if passed, would overthrow the government.

With other guarantees received from whipless Fine Gael TD Joe McHugh, who opposed government legislation on mica pay, and independents, it is now virtually inconceivable that the coalition will lose.

The Taoiseach taunted opponents in the Dáil that lunchtime on the subject, warning People Before Profit TDs in particular that it was only a matter of time before they were subsumed under Sinn Féin.
