Graduate recruitment programs must keep pace with the career aspirations of students

Traditional 18-month graduate recruitment programs favored by big employers need to be modernized to remain relevant post-pandemic, according to a new study.

Highered, the online talent platform for EFMD, surveyed 1,099 business school students in March 2022 about their career aspirations. While a majority (82%) are interested in graduate programs, more than a third (37%) said they were outdated and outdated.

The top reasons given are not relevant to career growth (29%), a desire for more meaning and purpose in a career (24%), Salary level (20%) and programs that are too long (20%).

dr Amber Wigmore Alvarez, Chief Talent Officer at Highered comments: “While recruitment programs in large organizations are undoubtedly still popular with graduates, the pandemic is having a notable impact on graduate career aspirations. A job in a company is no longer the automatic path, and some have a clear desire to pursue a very personal career path, such as B. founding or joining a start-up.”

In the study, nearly three quarters (73%) said they would consider joining a startup. The top six reasons are opportunities to learn (67%), being more innovative (53%), early responsibility and autonomy (48%), more opportunities (46%), positive and diverse culture (41%) and being more open to flexibility/ Remote work (40%).

Conversely, the benefits of a corporate recruitment program were seen as growth opportunities (77%), learning opportunities (62%), more opportunities in the organization (56%), graduate program prestige (53%), employer branding (48%) and compensation (42%) .

An overwhelming majority (87%) considered tailor-made graduate programs where the locations and roles performed during the program could be chosen as more relevant and attractive. Across the study, the majority (80%) said they were attracted to remote work opportunities.

Graduates are looking for flexibility in work patterns and concrete opportunities for learning and personal growth.
