Graham Norton, Jack Thorne and Strictly Come Dancing honored at RTS Awards

Graham Norton and screenwriter Jack Thorne have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to British television at this year’s Royal Television Society (RTS) Awards.

BC One was named Network of the Year on a night when its popular competition, Strictly Come Dancing, also received the prestigious RTS Jury Award.

The hard-hitting drama It’s A Sin also took home three awards, including Best Limited Series and Best Drama Writer for its creator Russell T Davies.

Strictly’s latest series saw its first deaf contestant, Rose Ayling-Ellis, achieve a ‘milestone’ win with partner Giovanni Pernice (Yui Mok/PA).

The winners were announced by comedian Tom Allen on Tuesday night at the star-studded ceremony, held in person at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

Chat show host Norton was recognized for his contributions in 2020 but was unable to accept the award in person due to the pandemic.

He returned to pick up the gong on Tuesday alongside Thorne, who is known for his work on British hit series Shameless and Skins.

The judges said Norton had “become THE face of entertainment on BBC One more than anyone in recent years” and praised the “warm, cheeky, mischievous” nature of his show.

Thorne has also been hailed as “one of the most in-demand writers on television” with a “relentless work ethic and dazzling talent” that has resulted in “an incredible body of work”.

The judges said Strictly Come Dancing “broke new ground” in 2021 due to its inclusive casting policies.

The final series of Strictly saw the inclusion of its first deaf contestant, Rose Ayling-Ellis, who, with partner Giovanni Pernice, achieved a “milestone” win as the show’s first disabled winner.

The winners were announced by comedian Tom Allen on Tuesday night at the star-studded ceremony, held in person at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel (Yui Mok/PA).

“By dancing her way to the first-ever disabled Glitterball trophy winner, Rose showed what’s possible when the barriers to possibility are removed – and talent is allowed to thrive and shine,” the judges said.

The show was also acclaimed for casting its first male dance couple in John Whaite and Johannes Radebe, demonstrating the producers’ commitment to keeping the competition “modern and ultimately reflective of its huge, diverse and appreciative audience”.

It’s A Sin star Callum Scott Howells not only took home Best Limited Series and Best Writer awards, but also won Best Actor awards after fending off co-star Olly Alexander.

Other winners included Gabrielle Creevy, who won Best Actress for her role in In My Skin, and Adjani Salmon, who won the Breakthrough Award.

Comedian Mo Gilligan took home the comedy entertainment award for his show The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan and his entertainment performance alongside AJ Odudu for The Big Breakfast.

The Duke of Cambridge’s 2021 Earthshot Prize took home the award for Best Live Event, with the judges calling it “technically stunning, utterly immersive and a compelling narrative”.

RTS Program Awards chairman Kenton Allen said the return of the in-person ceremony was “a truly remarkable moment.”

“All of tonight’s winners are fantastic examples of outstanding content, produced in the UK and resonating with audiences not just here but around the world,” he said.

“Congratulations to all of tonight’s winners and nominees; It’s a wonderful opportunity to recognize the creative and hard-working people behind British television.”
