Graham Potter says it’s crazy to talk about Prem’s 20-goal striker

Graham Potter has called questions about signing a 20-goal striker unbelievable.

Maupay has scored 26 high-profile goals for the Seagulls in three seasons and is reported to be asking a fee of around £15million.

Potter is aware that he is now being asked if he will bring a replacement.

But in his press conference ahead of the home game against Leeds, he candidly answered a question about whether his side had learned how to turn good performances into victories.

The head coach said: “Sometimes opinion isn’t very intelligent, especially in the world we move in with 24-hour media. We don’t have too much in-depth analysis of anything.

“There are always disagreements in football and we played well by definition.

“If you look at some of the performance data behind the performances, yes we should have won.

“But that’s why the game is fantastic. Sometimes, even often, in football, it’s not the better team that wins. That’s why we like it so much and it can drive you crazy.

“Then you get stuff like people saying you need someone to score 20 goals in the Premier League.

“But how many people scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season and can you name them? It’s only two. Salah and Kane.

“But how many times I’ve been asked if I could sign a 20-goal striker for Brighton is insane.

“Absolutely. Then I’ll call Tony Bloom and ask him to sign Kane!

“It’s unbelievable. But I experienced that for 18 months to two years.

“I have to be polite and respectful and answer.

“There aren’t even that many people who scored 15 goals in the Premier League last year!

“But there’s a narrative that you have to have that goalscorer who’s a proven goalscorer and will just land in our laps – and no one else will know about him.

“Because I think Salah and Kane are a little bit out of our budget!”

Albion’s seven league and cup goals so far this season have been shared by six players while keeping three clean sheets.

Potter enjoys sharing his goals, developing any talents he has – and making sure his team doesn’t need to score too many goals to win a game.

He said: “I don’t think our fans would be very happy if I just said, ‘Look, I just need a 20-goal forward’.

“Certainly those who are doing any kind of research because that’s just like passing the buck.

“What we are trying to do is improve as a team.

“How we attack as a team, how we defend as a team, how we are balanced as a team.

“People relate to how many goals we score.

“Football is not necessarily about how many goals you score.

“It’s about whether you score one goal more than the opponent.

“It’s not about the number of goals.

“The rules of football are you only have to score one goal more than your opponent, so it’s a matter of balance.

“Of course it helps if you can score millions of goals.

“But it’s not that helpful when you concede millions of goals.” Graham Potter says it’s crazy to talk about Prem’s 20-goal striker
