Gran slams Amazon for ‘ridiculous joke packaging’ after garden tool arrives in 6ft box

A grandmother was left baffled after a gardening tool she ordered from Amazon arrived in a 6ft box. She has since blasted the online retailer for its “joke packaging.”

An avid gardener couldn’t believe her eyes after a gardening tool she ordered from Amazon arrived in a massively oversized 6ft long box.

Jan Tullick slammed the “ridiculous joke wrapper” which towered over her – and which was far too big for the item to rattle around inside.

The green-fingered granny had ordered a £24.99 digging pole from the online giant to break up clay in her garden.

However, when the Roughneck Gorilla Bar actually arrived, they were initially unaware that the huge package was for them, assuming it was intended for one of their neighbors.

Now Jan, 64, is calling on Amazon to “reduce their packaging” and claims they are “not saving the environment”.

When Jan’s confused daughter Nicola Fail, 40, saw the large package, she joked that her mother must have secretly treated herself to a new sofa.

Shocked by the size, Jan, who is 5ft 6, posed next to the box and digging pole to demonstrate the size of the packaging.

To push her point further home, Jan’s 6ft 3 grandson Alfie Collins, 14, hopped into the box and popped the lid while standing upright.

Retired Jan, from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, said: “When I saw it coming up the path I said to my daughter it must be for next door because I’ve never ordered anything that big.

“When I opened the door, the boy said it was for my house number. I told him ‘the only thing I ordered is a digging stick, like a metal pole’ and he said ‘good luck getting rid of that box’.

“When we opened it, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The box was huge, about 6 feet tall, and the item was only 48 inches tall. It was wrapped in a piece of brown paper.”

Jan has asked Amazon to reduce its packaging.

She continued: “There was a lot of space, my grandson climbed in. They just had to wrap it in plastic instead of putting it in a giant box.

“My daughter thought I shopped in secret because I’m terrible on Amazon.

“I just thought it was a big joke, it was ridiculous. They really should reduce their packaging. Save the environment? Amazon doesn’t do that.”

An Amazon spokesman said: “Amazon is committed to reducing packaging waste and using less packaging material.

“Initiatives like the Frustration-Free Packaging Programs encourage manufacturers to package their products in easy-open packaging that is 100% recyclable and can be shipped to customers without Amazon boxes.

“Since 2015, Amazon has reduced the weight of outbound packaging per shipment by more than 36% and saved more than one million tons of packaging material, the equivalent of two billion shipping boxes.”
