The battle between light and darkness has never been so good in GRAND CROSS: ReNOVATION. The Sun Blade mechanic is a much-needed breather in the shmup space, one that heavyweight fans will love to master.

The almighty Sun Blade is yours to control with Eternal Sphere 4 and the new shmup GRAND CROSS: ReNOVATION by Heenteko Doujin. A super aggressive vertical shooter with a battle between light and dark, should players pick up their weapons and fight?

GRAND CROSS: A Review of Innovation

As NEXALTS, the player has quite a few tasks ahead of him – the almighty goddess Laevateinn has commanded an uprising and the player can stop it. Her army is mighty, and the forces of darkness have overtaken the world.

However, there is a light shining in the darkness; Sun Blade. Set to tell the story, this weapon can easily turn the tide of battle. With the push of a button, the player can fire a steady stream of energy that can deal massive damage, nullify enemy projectiles, and can adjust the angle for the perfect shot. There’s also the Sun Blade Super Charged Sun Blade for extra firepower, along with the Sun Blade Scatter that can easily take out any nearby threats.

However, there is a downside; using Sun Blade consumes your life. When everything is ready to kill you, every last hit is very important. However, the standard shot won’t cut it (literally); Sun Blade is needed to remove even the smallest mook.

This makes for an attractive mechanic, with players allocating their lives to getting a perfect shot. While HP recovers from not firing for a while, figuring out when to proceed to run out of breath first and when to stay is right there with Ikaruga’s color swapping system and Risk System Barrier Breaker Attack. It’s a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant genre.

This is twice as much as when using the Super Charged Sun Blade – it’s a serious weapon that can take out hordes of miniboss with ease. It’s particularly unique in that it can be used when you’re on the verge of defeat – one can shoot when there’s no more health left in your reserve. Sure, that means one mistake will lead to your doom, but it creates a risk-reward dynamic that encourages offensive and “win” play.

And getting good is an absolute must. GRAND CROSS: ReNOVATION pulls no punches, with a screen full of flash, enemies, and firepower. It can be difficult to gauge where everything is with its continuous and overwhelming scale, but it makes for an epic presentation. Although its doujin origins appear with typos and occasional low-resolution content, it still makes a lasting impression throughout its one-hour run.

In addition to the main mode, there is Stage Selection, Boss Passing and a way to compete for high scores for each level on the leaderboard. While the core game is a bit on the short-term side, those looking for a clear credit that the title will be in it for the long haul.

The Gran Turismo series can boast the ultimate in driving simulation software, but Fábio Fontes says it’s great for the swashbuckling Buck Up and Drive! With wild drift, abrasion, and even a one-on-one combat mode, should players buckle up (and drive)?

For fans of Keanu Reeves, they definitely want to treat their inner John Wick as an unstoppable assassin. omijdm, no doubt a regular at Continental, pays homage to the character with his new Unplugged beat-em-up. It’s one player against the world in this brawl – should players join the fight?

The adorable independent Shovel Knight, who’s always been busy selling Arby’s Kids Meals and filling out Super Smash Bros.’s Ultimate Assist Trophy title, has a new gig with Vine and Yacht’s Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon Club Games. Should players follow the lead of the mysterious Puzzle Knight, or should this hero sit on the sidelines?
