A gourmet grandma has made a splash at her nursing home by sharing Facebook tutorials showcasing her passion for food.

Jean Roberts, 85, who lives at Alveston Ley’s Bupa Care Home in Stratford-upon-Avon, has live streamed her cooking tips and hosted a series of online tutorials with her carers.

The pensioner says: “I’ve always loved to cook. I really enjoy making a delicious meal or dessert from fresh ingredients.

“I like to think that I passed my cooking knowledge on to my son Andrew as he is also a brilliant cook. So maybe it runs in the family!”

Jean moved into Alveston Leys Bupa Care Home in August 2021 and her caregivers quickly discovered her love for food and cooking.

She made pancakes covered with strawberries

Joanna Palmer, Jean’s daughter, commented on her first cooking tutorial, saying: “Go over Jamie, it’s ‘Jean Oliver’! It’s nice to see you cook. You’ve always loved being in the kitchen.”

So far, Jean has made cinnamon rolls with pecan ice cream, strawberry-covered pancakes, homemade burgers, and pizzas.

But Jean has a special fondness for Asian cuisine and hopes to feature some Singaporean dishes in her next video.

Phil Vickers, Senior Activity Coordinator at Alveston Leys Bupa Care Home said: “Jean has a genuine passion for cooking which shows in every food related activity we host.

“We always try to tailor our activities to each resident’s individuality, so we’re thrilled that Jean was keen to get involved and it inspired her fellow residents to get involved in cooking.

“I look forward to seeing what else Jean has to teach us and trying more of her delicious food.”

Jean’s Top 5 Tips: Always try to use fresh local produce whenever possible, always remember to measure and weigh, cooking is a science, always plan ahead and have your prepared ingredients ready. Mistakes happen!

Keep calm and stick to the recipe. Get family and friends involved and share the love.”
