To exclude, to expel:
Susanna Reid visited Linda Carty, who has been on death row in Texas for 20 years for killing a young mother and attempting to rob her four-day-old baby, a crime she insists she did not commit.
As a loving mother, Linda Carty longs to hug her two grandsons, but she is a death row inmate, the only British woman awaiting execution in America and must see her guests through a pane of glass. thick.
Carty served as a death row inmate in Texas for 20 years for murdering a young mother and attempting to take her 4-day-old baby, a crime she maintains she did not commit.
When host and journalist Susanna Reid visited her at the Mountain View Unit, a maximum-security prison in Texas, Carty told her, “If I commit this crime, I will receive my punishment.
“Anyone who knows the system knows Texas doesn’t admit when they’re wrong. I will fight to the end.
“If I lose my life, I know I have people behind me who won’t stop until they clear my name.” Bianca Jagger has taken over Carty’s case, and human rights group Reprieve is also supporting her.
In May 2001, a court heard that Carty had staged the kidnapping of her pregnant neighbor, 25-year-old Joana Rodriguez, by three men in Houston, Texas, with the intention of cutting the baby. out of Joana’s body.
At the time of the murder, Carty was shopping and pulling, but Joana had given birth to son Ray four days earlier.
Ray survived the kidnapping and was found in a car the next day, but Joana was found suffocated in the trunk of Linda’s car.
Susanna said: “The story is twisted. Joana is a new mother, she has everything to live for, but dies under the most terrible circumstances. Someone needs to be held accountable for it. Right now, it’s Linda Carty. ”
Born on Saint Kitts Island before independence from Britain, Carty retained her UK citizenship and passport after moving to Houston, aged 23, with her daughter Jovelle, now the mother of two grandsons aged 23. Carty’s teen Jhori and Caden.
When Carty was arrested, the British consulate in Houston was not notified, as it should have been. And she was assigned to attorney Jerry Guerinot, a notoriously hopeless lawyer who had lost all 34 cases that he had defended at trial.
He is said to have met Carty just 15 minutes before her case and failed to call any defense witnesses at her trial.
The jury found that Gerald Anderson, Chris Robinson and Carlos Williams went to Joana’s home on May 16, 2001, and abducted her and baby Ray.
They said that Carty wanted the baby to grow up on her own. The men all received long prison sentences, but only Carty received the death penalty.
When asked about her part in the crime in Susanna’s ITV documentary, Carty said: “I can honestly look you in the eye and tell you I have nothing to do with this crime.”
Now 63, she claims she was framed and her only mistake was lending her car to someone. It was used in the kidnapping, but there is no DNA evidence linking her to Joana’s murder.
But Lynn Hardaway, a former Assistant Harris County District Attorney, said: “I have no doubt she is guilty. All the evidence is consistent and has her as the head. “
Baby clothes and a baby chair were found in the hotel room where Carty was staying at the time and she had told her ex-boyfriend that she was expecting a baby, but was not pregnant at the time of her arrest.
Carty says she suffered a miscarriage, but this has never been corroborated by any medical records.
After spending time with Carty, Susanna is still uncertain about the verdict. She said: “The truth of the matter is, a woman was found bound and gagged, and she suffocated.
“Terrible. Absolutely horrible. And what the court heard Linda planned to do with the unborn baby… is almost impossible to say.” But she doesn’t fully believe that Carty is guilty.

Susanna said: “I find it impossible to make a final judgment. She was tried by jury and found guilty and all her appeals failed.
@ The justice system convicted her. But I spoke to the British attorney, who reviewed the case and listened to her American defense attorney, who was sentenced to death before he tried her, and now says, ‘You can’t be sentenced to death when you see injustice in this case’.
“When you talk to those people about the disputed evidence, you think, what about this? Who was responsible for it?
“What really happened that night? Was she a mean, evil person when one of her accomplices called her and the ringer? Or was there a plea agreement , which means she has to take responsibility? I don’t think that’s an easy or comfortable answer.”
But she gives a death sentence.
“These are desperate places,” says Susanna. And because of the appeals process in the US justice system, these people stay there for years. Linda has been there for 20 years.
“There are a lot of people here who think the death penalty is a good idea. If you go back to the death penalty, you have to be absolutely 100% certain, right, that someone is guilty.”
If Carty is executed, she will be the first British prisoner to be punished with the death penalty since Ruth Ellis in 1955.
“I would lie because I said that living in this environment, I don’t think about it (execution), but I don’t let it consume my thinking,” Carty said.
