Great British Bake Off: Brighton’s Janusz is through to the semi-finals

Brighton’s Great British Bake Off contestant has taken a step closer to baking glory.

Janusz Domagala made it through pastry week to secure his spot in next week’s series semifinals, despite a ‘raw’ vol au vent and spring roll mishap.

The five bakers battled it out in last night’s quarterfinals with vol-au-vents, spring rolls and a slice of pie.

Janusz has hit the ground running with his signature strawberries and creamy vol-au-vents.

The 34-year-old struggled with his crème patisserie filling, eventually abandoning the company and replacing it with whipped cream.

His creations were called “boring” by judge Paul Hollywood and “raw” by fellow judge Prue Leith.

“They’re quite attractive, I like what you did with the strawberries on top of the frosting,” Paul said.

“They’re a little uneven.

“They took a little longer in the oven.”

“How did you get on with the crème pat?” Prue said.

‘What crème pat?’ said Janusz.

“It never happened.”

“You’re still a bit raw,” Prue said.

“It’s a bit boring,” Paul said.

“Because it’s just cream and strawberries.”

Next came the technical stage, where Janusz narrowly missed out on first place after losing one of his spring rolls or miscounting.

Finally, Janusz’s “the very hungry sausage dog” was a homage to his own sausage dog, Nigel, who he owns with his partner Simon.

As part of his showstopper, Janusz had a salmon pie, as well as a sausage pie, a dauphinois pie and an apple pie.

The judges praised the taste of each cake but criticized the pastry.

“I think you could have defined the fish better,” Prue said.

“I think if you hadn’t told me it was a fish I wouldn’t have recognized it.”

Paul said: ‘The salmon is beautifully cooked, the pastries are fine, could have been flakier.

“It’s mostly just a piece of salmon.

“Sausage meat is nice.

“It’s a bit dry.”

While Prue said about the apple pie, “That’s lovely.

Maxy was eliminated from the competition while Sayabira won another Star Baker title.

“I’m in the semifinals,” said Janusz.

“How weird is that?”

The quarterfinalists meet Pâtisserie.
