Great British Bake Off’s second contestant was eliminated during cookie week

The Maisam student became the second contestant to leave The Great British Bake Off, as cookie week saw lavish cakes and cracked cookie shops.

The second episode of the Channel 4 show saw 11 contestants tasked with baking signature macarons, Garibaldi cookies, and a 3D masquerade-inspired host.

Maisam, 18, born in Libya, from Greater Manchester, was disqualified after failing to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith with a performance of Venice masks or carrot-shaped cookies.

In a letter shared on Twitter, she said: “Bake Off is simply life changing and one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

“It taught me to be a risk taker and representing my Libyan heritage in a tent is something I am really proud of.

“Starting grilling in my own kitchen and getting inside the tent just shows that you shouldn’t underestimate your passions because they can take you places you never imagined possible.”

Swedish-born architectural assistant Maxy, 29, earned baker stardom after receiving a “Hollywood handshake” for her impressive performance.

She then said, “I don’t think I’ll even be on the show let alone shake hands and be a star baker so I’m really happy. It definitely gives me more confidence. “

The first contestants were challenged to create 12 identical macarons, disguised to look like something different from the familiar French cookies.

“We want to see a lot of color, we want to be vibrant and we want to see a little bit of personality come through,” Hollywood said.

“Produce something that has power and looks great, don’t try and overdo it at this stage.”

The contestants chose from a variety of macarons, with Carole and Sandro choosing to make burgers, Janusz choosing a watermelon, and Maxy making chrysanthemums.

Maisam went to buy carrot-shaped cookies, telling host Matt Lucas that the creations were inspired by her mother’s favorite flavors.

“What can happen to a macaron? Everything. Anything is possible with a macaron,” she says.

Hollywood said the texture of her cookie was “in the right place” but the orange blossom flavor was “too strong” and he wanted to see more of it in her cake.

The round saw two “Hollywood handshakes” given to Dawn and Maxy for their signature cake.

“Have you washed it yet? Never wash Hollywood,” host Noel Fielding later told Dawn.

“You let it close like a plastic and then you peel it off like a glove.”

In the technical challenge, the contestants made 12 Garibaldi cookies, garnished with chocolate feathers, with Dame Prue’s warning to the contestants: “Don’t get creative.”

“Just stick to the recipe and don’t be disappointed,” she says.

Baker Syabira seems to have misinterpreted the short saying about “chocolate with feathers” – filled with white chocolate feathers on top of her cookies, prompting Dame Prue to giggle.

“It’s pretty original… it’s not what we asked for,” she said, while Hollywood described them as “ridiculous”.

Electronic engineer Abdul came last in the challenge as his creations were later labeled “a mess”, with the look of the cookies being criticized by Hollywood as “just one of the problems”. “.

The technique was won by Rebs, a Northern Ireland master’s student, with James and Sandro finishing second and third respectively.

“I really don’t know how that happened,” Rebs said, after looking surprised by her win.

But her luck didn’t last, with the cookie base of her showstopper mask breaking in the oven before assembling in the final challenge.

The contestants were tasked with creating 3D cookie masks, with several bakers choosing different intricate designs.

Forced to rework the base of her Venetian-style mask, the size of Rebs’ final work was noticed by both Hollywood and Dame Prue.

“I think it’s very charming, maybe it’s a little small,” Dame Prue said, with Hollywood adding: “I think you can do more than that.”

As for the taste of the cookies, he added: “I think the seasoning is too hot for the gingerbread cookie, it’s quite soft, in fact it’s more like a cookie than a cookie.”

Dame Prue added: “I think you can be an enchanting designer.”

Disaster also struck Carole during the show, when her mask cracked and broke, minutes before the end of the ordeal.

The baker added lard to his mix, which Hollywood pointed out made the biscuits soft and unstable.

“It’s a pity because it’s beautiful and I love the taste of (macaron),” he said.

Maisam created a Venetian mask for her exhibitors, describing the design as “simple but effective”.

Dame Prue admits: “In an ideal world, I’d rather you do a little more.”

The popular baking show has returned to Welford Park in Berkshire for this series after two years of filming at Down Hall in Hatfield Heath, Essex.
