Greens demand an end to LGBTIQA+ deportations ahead of Brighton Pride

THE Green Party in Brighton has reiterated its opposition to the government’s deportation plan for Rwanda as Pride returns this weekend.

Ahead of Brighton Pride’s in-person return this weekend, Greens have called for an end to deportations of asylum seekers.

At this weekend’s parade, which is themed “Love, Protest, Unity,” Green councilors will march alongside communities to protest the “terrible” plans.

Greens say Pride’s return is welcome – but recalls more needs to be done to achieve LGBTIQA+ equality.

Deputy Council President Hannah Clare said: “The treatment of refugees by this government is appalling in many ways.

“They received applause for their Homes for Ukraine program, where hundreds of hosts kindly opened their homes in our city.

“Yet there are still families who have been placed in unsafe hotel accommodation in Hove by the Home Office.

“Over the last week we have heard stories of families being threatened by the accommodation provider just because they wanted to protect their family.

“As a city of refuge, we proudly welcome refugees to Brighton & Hove and ensure they are safe and welcome.

“But our government’s treatment of refugees has never been so bad.

“While we will march in joy to celebrate the return of Pride, we must remember that Pride is first and foremost a protest too.

“The Greens will march in solidarity and protest against the government’s deportation of LGBTIQA+ refugees.”

Brighton Green MP Caroline Lucas said: “I am delighted that Pride is returning to Brighton and Hove.

“Pride is both a celebration and an opportunity to say loud and clear that LGBTIQA+ rights matter.

“It is a reminder that – if our shameful government is willing to deport LGBTIQA+ asylum seekers to Rwanda, where they will be persecuted in a country with a far worse human rights record than our own – Brighton will always be a city of refuge for those seeking safety.”

“And it is an opportunity to demand that we do not rest until we achieve equality for all.” Greens demand an end to LGBTIQA+ deportations ahead of Brighton Pride
