Greta Gerwig: Working with Adam Driver on White Noise was a ‘complete moment’

Greta Gerwig has said that starring with Adam Driver in the movie White Noise was a “complete moment” because of their shared history.

The apocalyptic action film stars Driver as Jack Gladney, a university professor focused on the study of Adolf Hitler, who lives with his wife, Babette, played by Gerwig.

Their lives are thrown into chaos when a chemical leak causes an “airborne toxic event” where they live.

British actress Jodie Turner-Smith, known for films including Queen And Slim, also co-stars Marvel star Don Cheadle, who plays Gladney’s colleague at university.

The Oscar-nominated film directed by Noah Baumbach is adapted from the 1985 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo.

At the film’s UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, Gerwig told the PA news agency: “The great thing about Don DeLillo’s novel is that it feels, even though it was written in 1985, but it feels the same afterwards. a big event.

“There’s something about it that he gets to the core of reactive reality, and then the heightened absurdity of everything, which is amazing when working with an existing text that already exists. since a long time ago.”

Speaking of Baumbach, her partner of over a decade, she added: “And then working with Noah has always been my favorite thing. He’s an extraordinary director and it’s nice to remember how great he was, as well as an actor.

“He and Adam have worked together on a lot of movies and Adam and I have worked together, but we have also known each other since we were kids, like 21 or 22 years old…so done. Being together is really a fulfilling and joyful moment.”

Producers David Heyman and Rose Uniacke (Ian West/PA)

Baumbach said he recruited Gerwig and Driver for the project because he knew there would be “challenges”.

He told PA: “I worked with them on a number of films. Greta and I are a nice reunion. We have worked together, collaborating behind the scenes a lot over the years and recently.

“But I felt like there were a lot of challenges making this film so I wanted to have people that I know I can trust and friends and family to be there with me.”

Producer David Heyman said he signed on to produce White Noise because Baumbach has been confirmed as its director.

He told PA, “He is a writer and director that I have long admired, and I have had the good fortune to produce Marriage Story. He’s a good friend, I’ve produced his last two films. When he came knocking, I wanted to make his movie.”

Heyman has also produced recent Paddington films and says he has been touched by how people remember the Queen by recalling her famous sketch of the Platinum Year with the bear.

He said: “I think in these times Paddington’s kindness and warmth is greatly needed and I think his kindness to her, and seeing her show it in a very human way, like a king. fake but in a very human way, is something that moves people. .

“And I feel a real privilege to be a part of that, a small part of that short film. But thankful that everyone was touched by it. I didn’t know that the words “Thank you for everything” meant so much. “

Raffey Cassidy, who plays the daughter of the central family, spoke about the film’s relevance during Covid.

She told PA: “When I read it, I was shocked at how relevant the script was to what was going on. I read it at the height of Covid so on that level of fear I can personally relate and I think the rest of the world will too.”
