GTA 5 has just sold another 5 million copies as GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition remains irrelevant

Just a few months ago we heard that the Grand Theft Auto Overall, the series continued to sell like hot cakes: in February 2022, series sales exceeded 370 million, with the latest major release – GTA5 – Sales are well over 160 million units.

Has everyone forgotten about Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition?

Fast forward three months, and the game has – sort of – sold even more. During Take-Two Interactive’s Q4 2022 conference call, the publisher noted that GTA 5 has sold an additional 5 million units over the past three months.

That means the Grand Theft Auto series has sold a combined 375 million copies worldwide since last count. When you think about it, that doesn’t sound too good for GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition, which didn’t even make it to 1 million units sold last quarter. Expect delayed physical releases, horrific errors, and missing files.

Additionally, the release of the mobile GTA trilogy has been pushed back to fiscal year 2023 – or, to put it more simply, it will be released between now and March 2023.

Elsewhere for Rockstar and Take-Two, it was revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 has now surpassed 44 million copies sold. While GTA Online continues to do business and bring regular revenue to the company, Red Dead Online remains in a state of suspended animation (it’s been over a year since the game’s last significant update).

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar parent company Take-Two Interactive, has at least acknowledged player frustration, stating that more content is planned for the online portion of the Western title. However, he didn’t provide any details on what that content would be or when it would be released (thanks, IGN).

“Rockstar Games is talking about the upcoming updates and we’re working on a lot at Rockstar Games,” said Zelnick. “I’ve heard the frustration, it’s flattering that they want more content and Rockstar will say more in due course.”

Additionally, Take-Two has the right ports/remasters planned for the next three years, noting that for the next fiscal year it will “double the number of core immersive titles” (that are games with “the deepest gameplay and most hours of content”) are planned year as in the same period in 2022.
