The daughter of a woman who took her own life after participating in a show hosted by Jeremy Kyle has said she wants people to know that Steve Dymond “wasn’t the only one”.

Erica Pawson filmed an episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show in 2005 with her husband Paul – although that episode never aired – and her friends say she believes joining the show will make her “popular”.

Sadly, however, Erica took her life after she joined the show and left behind her daughter Laura, then 12, and husband Paul.

Dymond’s tragic death in May 2019 eventually led to the demise of the controversial ITV talk show.

His episode was never aired on TV, although behind-the-scenes developments were watched by the public, with guests coming in to reveal the emotional turmoil they say they face. after agreeing to appear on the show.

ITV canceled The Jeremy Kyle Show in May 2019 following Steve’s death – although Erica’s husband said: “I remember when I heard about Steve Dymond, I was here watching Good Morning Britain.

“Then he died and they stopped the show. I was like what the hell, they didn’t stop the show for my wife when she killed herself after being on the Jeremy Kyle Show. The first year it started in October 2005. When my wife died, they did nothing.”

A new Channel 4 documentary, airing Sunday and Monday, examines the behind-the-scenes and personal accounts of those affected by appearances on the show.

Among them were Erica’s husband, neighbors and daughter, who described her as “vulnerable”.

Her friends Fran and Tony Whitehead, 72 and 71, recall Erica gleefully telling them she would be famous by appearing on the show, adding: “She was like a lamb slaughtered”.

Paul, 57, said: “Erica thought it would be a good day to broadcast some of her views on TV.”

He recalled the two were separated from the moment she was brought to the set until they stepped onto the stage.

“They split you instantly, and they pump you up years old — keeping you hooked for hours,” he said. “They told me to start… Jeremy Kyle asked Erica if she wanted to break up with him and she said yes.

“When I got back, I was away for a few days and we were going to talk about it on Friday but she died on Thursday.”

Becoming emotional, Paul said that he “smashed .” [himself] up” about what happened, explaining: “I blame myself every day for it. I killed her. “

Erica’s daughter Laura added: “I just want people to know that Steve Dymond isn’t the only one. They’ve been ruining lives since they started.”

ITV said in a statement in response to the Channel 4 documentary: The Jeremy Kyle Show, which has been on the air for 14 years. At that time, more than 20,000 people joined the program to seek help with relationship problems or problems related to drugs or alcohol. “ITV does not accept the accusation that the center of this show is ‘bad culture’ within the production team. However, Jeremy addressed his show in an interview with Sun in 2021, said it had left him “devastated” and believed he had been made a “scapegoat” in the fallout.

He said: “I don’t want to hear ‘damn me’, and like I said the whole thing was a terrible tragedy – devastating, of course, for Steve Dymond’s friends and family, and for with many people who have worked on the program.

“But it hit me hard. And it’s terrible to feel like a scapegoat, and I can’t say anything about the accusations that only I seem to be leveling.

“I feel hunted and held accountable for everything that happened around that show. But I’m the only one facing it. “
