Hair expert reveals little-known trick to getting gum out of hair

Some people might think it sounds bizarre, but for many of us — especially those with kids or those who made the mistake when they were kids — just the thought of chewing gum brings back horrible memories that it had to be cut a piece of hair because it just can’t be saved.

Melissa posting on TikTok under the username @mabrowsandhairclaims that all you need to remove gum from your hair is some styling mousse.

In one video, Melissa intentionally squeezed gum into her hair – much to the dismay of people in the comments – and then used mousse to show how easy it was to get it out.

She said: “It’s good in there. Forget peanut butter, forget oil, forget ice cream—use mousse. Any kind will work.”

The hair expert — who practices hair loss — covered the gums in mousse and began slowly loosening her hair from the sticky mess while the mousse went to work to “break down” the components in the gums.

She added, “Mousse breaks down gum. It dissolves gum so the gum comes right out.”

Melissa then took a comb to her hair to gently comb out the last bits of gum until her hair was completely clean — in no time at all.

Commenters on the video, which has garnered over 505,000 likes and more than 4.2 million views, were amazed by the hack, and many of them said they had no idea mousse was so effective at removing chewing gum.

One person said: “Oh my god this better go super viral! This is a must for parents.”

While another added: “This is groundbreaking!”

“I’m blown away,” said a third, “I’m a hairdresser and didn’t know this trick. Thank you for sharing!”

And others were just horrified at the thought of even having gum in their hair, as some said they “gasped” when they saw Melissa intentionally squeeze gum into her tresses.

Someone joked, “Girls, you can’t do that without warning! I think we all just had a heart attack.”

As someone else also wrote, “Though I trusted the process, I still winced when you just casually crushed the gum into your hair.”

And a third remarked: “I gasped when you smashed it in there.”
