Handwritten lyrics by John Lydon Sex Pistols sold at auction for over £50,000

A handwritten lyrics sheet by Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has sold at auction for more than £50,000 in a special sale of memorabilia from the notorious UK punk band.

His page features the original lyrics for the band’s two hit singles, Holidays In The Sun and Submission, which is said to have been penned in 1977 by Lydon, better known as Johnny Rotten.

The lyrics are part of a private collection of artwork, posters and documents that were sold at Sotheby’s auction house on October 21 for a total value of £354,567.

Lydon’s lyrics for Holidays In The Sun and Submission have grossed a total of £50,400, previously estimated at between £15,000 and £20,000.

The collection was assembled in the 1990s by contemporary art dealer Paul Stolper and critic Andrew Wilson, who was previously the senior curator of British modern art at Tate.

It highlights how the influential punk band, headed by Lydon, spearheaded a revolution in music and popular culture in the 1970s alongside manager Malcolm McLaren.

The Stolper/Wilson collection went up for auction in London from 10 to 21 October after being displayed at locations around the world including Villa Medici in Rome, Musee De La Musique in Paris and Kunsthalle Vienna .

The collection also features the work of artist Jamie Reid, whom McLaren met at the Croydon School of Art in 1968 and designed the band’s logo and recognizable cover art.

Reid’s God Save The Queen poster, owned by the late Sid Vicious, also sold for a whopping £44,100.
