The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have said they are ‘siding with the Ukrainian people’

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they were “siding with the Ukrainian people” in a joint statement online.

The message, shared on their Archewell website, read: “Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell stand with the Ukrainian people against transgression international and humanitarian law, and encourages the global community and community of leaders to do the same.”

The Prince served in the Army for ten years, rising to the rank of Captain and making two tours of Afghanistan.

The couple, speaking from their mansion home in the US, spoke out after a day of Russian military attacks on people in Ukraine that have resulted in the deaths of 57 people so far.

Russian missiles were fired at major cities in the early hours of the morning, shortly after Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion to begin.

Several soldiers on the front lines were killed as the army advanced towards Kyiv.

Thousands of people fled the city, fearing an approaching enemy, as politicians announced that Russia would be severely punished.

Earlier this evening, US President Joe Biden said “strong restrictions” would be imposed on Russia and announced sanctions would affect Moscow in the long term.

He said in a speech to the American people: “Putin is the aggressor. Putin chose this war. And now he and his country will suffer the consequences.

“Over the past few weeks, I have sent thousands of additional forces to Germany and Poland as part of our commitment to NATO.

“This will cost the Russian economy dearly, both immediately and over time.

“We have purposefully designed these sanctions to maximize the long-term impact on Russia and minimize the impact on the United States and our allies.

“I want to be clear, the United States is not doing this alone.

“Over the months, we have built a coalition of partners representing more than half of the global economy.”

Earlier, a US defense official said Russia had launched more than 160 missiles in a fierce shelling of Ukraine.

The message from the Sussexes came hours after it was revealed they would be awarded the highest honor FROM the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for outstanding public service.

The couple, who created the Archewell charity after resigning from royal duties and moving to Los
Angeles area, set to receive prestigious Presidential Award at 53rd NAACP Image Awards live broadcast on
