In January 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan released their bombastic statement on social media, revealing they were stepping down from their royal roles and splitting their time between the UK and US, where they would “work towards becoming financially independent”.

At the time, multiple sources reported that the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William were shocked by the news and had not been consulted beforehand.

Her Majesty then invited her grandson along with Prince Charles and Prince William to a “Sandringham Summit” to discuss plans for Harry’s departure.

Although it seemed the couple’s decision had been rushed, they had actually planned it for a long time, according to Diana, Princess of Wales’ biographer Andrew Morton.

The author spoke to The Mirror podcast, Pod save the queenabout how early Harry and Meghan started thinking about leaving The Firm, claiming talks started just six months after their wedding.

Morton told the podcast, “Harry was chatting with Oprah Winfrey in a London hotel in November 2018, just six months after they got married.

“That’s why they thought about a different direction of travel early on.

“The irony is that they were given the keys to the First Class lounge when Prince Harry was given the position of Youth Ambassador to the Commonwealth.

“This was practically the Queen’s way of saying, ‘You make the rest of the world, leave William and Catherine to Britain, where they will eventually be the heads of state.'”

The couple announced they will step down from the royal family in January 2020.

Their statement read: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have decided to make a transition this year to begin building a progressive new role within this institution.

“We intend to step down as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work towards becoming financially independent while continuing to give Her Majesty the Queen our full support.

“Through your encouragement, especially over the last few years, we feel ready to make this adjustment.

“We now plan to balance our time between the UK and North America and continue to carry out our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth and our Patronages.

“This geographic balance will allow us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while allowing our family the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman then said talks with the couple were “at an early stage”, adding: “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues and will take time to work through will take.”

Elsewhere in the interview with Pod save the queenAndrew Morton revealed that Prince Harry saw his marriage to Meghan as his way out of the royal family and why the Queen would have understood if they had just taken a few years to consider their future roles.

Morton said: “They were thinking about living in New Zealand and they even spoke to the Prime Minister of New Zealand about it – so they had all sorts of plans and thoughts for their future.

“It didn’t work out because when it comes down to it Prince Harry is cursed with charisma but hates being a prince and I think he saw Meghan as a way out. They didn’t have to abandon the royal family like they did, but they did.”

The author continued: ‘In the late 1940s, after marrying, the Queen and Prince Philip lived in Malta for a while as he continued his career in the Royal Navy and many thought he would join him as First Lord of the Admiralty was such a star.

“You didn’t think for a minute that George VI. would die so soon and figured they would spend about 20 years on the fringes of the royal family.

“So the Queen has always been very understanding for anyone who wants to retire for a few years and just enjoy family life because you’ve been a king for a long time.”
