Harry and Meghan will address the crowd at the Invictus Games opening ceremony tonight

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will both later speak onstage at the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games.

Arry and Meghan will address the audience at the televised event in The Hague, Netherlands, which will be attended by members of the Dutch royal family and the country’s Prime Minister.

The couple made their first public appearance together in Europe since stepping down as senior working royals more than two years ago, when they attended a reception at the Games yesterday.

Their performance at the Zuiderpark in The Hague came after they visited the Queen and met the Prince of Wales in Windsor on Thursday after flying in from their home in the US.

Ahead of tonight’s opening ceremony, Harry and Meghan will be watching the Land Rover Driving Challenge.

Jaguar Land Rover is supporting the games financially.

The opening ceremony will include live performances by the Kaiser Chiefs, Royal Military Band Johan Willem Friso, singer-songwriter Anneke van Giersbergen and rock band DI-RECT.

Princess Margriet, Prince Pieter-Christiaan and Prime Minister Mark Rutte are expected, with Mr Rutte making a speech on the importance of the Invictus Games.

A crew has joined Harry and Meghan at the games as part of filming for a Netflix documentary called Heart Of Invictus – a series from Archewell Productions that follows people attending the event.

The Invictus Games Ukraine team manager – who will star in the documentary – said she spoke to Meghan about the importance of “having a voice”.

Oksana Horbach, 39, works in the supply chain in Kyiv for the Ukrainian armed forces and provides meals to soldiers.

She told the PA news agency: “I spoke to Meghan about the importance of having a voice and she totally understood that – be heard, be loud, have a voice, just tell your own truth, your experience. It is very important to her.

“And she told me that having this platform, the Invictus Games platform, so that the nations, especially Ukraine, can have this voice, is something that they deeply and wholeheartedly support.”

Ms Horbach said the Netflix team was filming for the Invictus documentary on Friday, adding that at this point she doesn’t know how prominent she will be in the series.

“The goal is to make a nice film. We want to make a nice film, for example, people around the world know more about the values of Invictus and about Ukraine as a nation participating in the Invictus games and what we plan to do to actually make it happen for us realize,” she said.

Harry founded the Invictus Games to support the rehabilitation of injured or ill military personnel and veterans from around the world by challenging them to compete in sporting events similar to the Paralympics.

Harry and Meghan’s trips to the UK and Netherlands come after the couple were absent from the Duke of Edinburgh’s memorial service in London last month.

Harry is filing a lawsuit against the Home Office after being told he would no longer receive the same level of personal protective equipment when visiting from the US, despite offering to pay for it himself.

The Duke wants to bring his children to visit, but he and his family “can’t go back to his house” because it’s too dangerous, his legal representative said.

The opening ceremony will be shown on BBC.
