Harry, Meghan Markle urge Spotify to tackle COVID misinformation

Prince Harry and Meghan MarkleArchewell’s production company said they are continuing to shoot Spotify to make changes to address “serious harm” caused by COVID misinformation put on its platform.

The first British royal couple have an exclusive multi-year podcast deal with Spotify, although they’ve only released a short holiday special so far.

In a statement on Sunday, Archewell said Harry and Meghan first contacted Spotify in April 2021 to express “concern” about the “completely real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on the internet” its foundation”. Statement do not call out Joe Roganbut it was last April when the hugely popular podcaster drew widespread criticism after he suggested people don’t need to get the COVID vaccine if they are young and healthy on “The Joe Rogan Experience”, distributed exclusively by Spotify.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who last year officially parted ways with the British Royal Family, are speaking out on the matter after Spotify has removed Neil Young’s catalog from streamer last week due to his objections to Spotify distributing the Rogan podcast. “Spotify has recently become a very damaging force through public disinformation and lies about COVID,” Young said, citing a Open letters from more than 260 medical professionals calls on Spotify to stop coronavirus hypocrisy in Rogan’s podcast. Later, Joni Mitchell also said she would remove her music from Spotify.

“Since the founding of Archewell, we have worked to address the global misinformation crisis in real time,” an Archewell representative said in a statement. “Hundreds of millions of people are affected by the serious harm of misinformation and rampant misinformation every day. Last April, our co-founders began voicing concerns to our partners at Spotify about the all-too-real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on its platform. We have continued to express our concerns to Spotify to ensure that changes to Spotify’s platform are made to help address this public health crisis. We look forward to Spotify to meet this moment and are committed to continuing our work together as it is. ”

Meanwhile, on Saturday (January 29), author and researcher, Dr Brené Brown – who has an exclusive podcast deal with Spotify for two shows – said she has paused her podcasts indefinitely. She did not provide a reason for the decision.

“I will not be releasing any podcasts until further notice,” Brown said in a statement tweet. “To our #UnlockingUs and #DaretoLead communities, I apologize and I will let you know if and when that changes.”

Under Spotify’s current policy banning COVID misinformation, the company’s moderation team must remove content from its platform that “promotes dangerously false, deceptive, or misleading content about COVID-19 that can may cause offline harm and/or a direct threat to public health. Spotify has told partners that the company has removed more than 20,000 podcast episodes for violating its COVID disinformation policy since the beginning of the pandemic.

Harry and Meghan’s Archewell signed a contract with Spotify in 2020 to produce exclusive podcasts that “build community through shared experience, narrative, and value”. Since then, Archewell has always been interested in what shows they’re podcasting, but recently Spotify’s Gimlet posted a job listing looking to hire a new team to produce a weekly podcast with Archewell featured “famous women”.
