Harry Styles already has an enviable acting resume for a newcomer, from Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk to Don’t Worry Darling and My Policeman.
But the pop star said Monday at the Venice International Film Festival that when he’s acting, he often feels like “I have no idea what I’m doing.”
The arrival of Styles at the Lido, where Don’t Worry Darling has its world premiere on Monday night, was one of the most anticipated events of a star-packed festival.
At a press conference ahead of the premiere, Styles was peppered with questions about his fans, his career, and whether he would work with director Olivia Wilde again, none of which he answered.
In Don’t Worry Darling, Styles plays Jack, who works for the mysterious Victory Project, led by Chris Pines’ charismatic, cult-like leader in an experimental, mid-century-style community.
Florence Pugh plays Jack’s wife, Alice, who has every consolation in the world for not asking questions. But soon she sees cracks in the veneer.
“I think it’s fun to play in worlds that aren’t necessarily your own. This world that’s supposedly so perfect is really fun to pretend to play in,” Styles said. “There wasn’t too much acting.”
Styles took several days off from performing at Madison Square Garden to attend the “Don’t Worry Darling” premiere in Venice with Wilde and co-stars Pine and Gemma Chan.
But despite juggling two high-profile careers in the arts, he doesn’t see many parallels between music and acting.
“Personally, I think they’re opposites in a lot of ways. I think making music is a very personal thing,” Styles said.
“There are aspects of acting where you draw on experiences you’ve had, but for the most part you’re pretending to be someone else. I think that’s what I enjoy most: pretending to pretend.”

He added: “I think the fun part is you never know what you’re doing. I’ve been doing music for a long time, but what I like about acting is that I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.”
Fans began gathering outside the theater early Monday to book hours in advance of prime red carpet seats for the premiere. Many have had personal stories of how Styles’ music has impacted their lives.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the people who have supported me throughout my life and the fans in particular have always given me a place to be myself and feel comfortable and express myself,” he said of the what it means means so much to so many people.
“I would like to hope that I can give them that space back.”
