Harry Styles, Sam Fender and actress Jessie Buckley make the shortlist for the Mercury Prize

Harry Styles earned his first Mercury Award nomination on a shortlist of a host of other first-time nominees.

Ormer One Direction star turned soloist Styles, 28, has been nominated for her third solo studio album Harry’s House, which has just achieved its sixth week at number one on the UK album chart and now has more weeks at the top of the chart than all of Direction’s One Albums combined.

The list of 12 strongmen running for the prestigious award, recognizing the best British album of the year, also includes Leeds rock group Yard Act with their debut studio album The Overload and best alternative rock artist Brit, who won. Sam Fender’s Seventeen Going Award. Below.

Little Simz, who won Best New Artist at the Brit Awards, scooped up another Mercury Award nomination this year for Sometimes I Can Be Introvert – was on the shortlist 2019 for her album Gray.

Bafta-nominated actress Jessie Buckley, who just won the Olivier Award for best actress for her role as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, is also on the shortlist for the album For All Our Days That Tear The Heart with Bernard Butler .

The Isle of Wight band Wet Leg, who performed at Glastonbury this year, were also nominated for their album of the same name while Scottish pianist Fergus McCreadie was shortlisted for the album Forest Floor after Cairn Highly rated released last year.

British musician Self Esteem appeared on the shortlist for her second studio album Priorifying Pleasure while singer-songwriter Joy Crookes’ debut album Skin also featured.

Rock duo Nova Twins were nominated for their album Supernova, along with British musical artist Kojey Radical for Reason To Smile and Welsh musician Gwenno for an album titled Tresor.

The shortlist for the Mercury Prize was narrowed down by a jury this year that included DJ Annie Mac, musician Jamie Cullum, broadcaster Jamz Supernova, songwriter Anna Calvi, broadcaster Danielle Perry and songwriter Hazel Wilde .

The judges said: “This year, it is not easy to pull down 12 albums, simply because there are so many remarkable albums to choose from.

“It’s proof that British and Irish music thrived during turbulent times in history, with selected albums covering everything from imaginative pop to avant-garde rap to pop folk. space-rock of the Cornish language.

“We feel that these 12 great albums all have something to say artistically and socially, all in their own unique and rich ways. Now comes the really hard part… just pick an overall winner. ”

This year’s shortlist was announced at a launch event hosted by BBC Music’s Huw Stephens on Tuesday.

It was also announced live at 11am by Nemone on BBC Radio 6 Music as part of their special Mercury Prize shortlist.

The awards ceremony will take place on September 8 at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith.

It will feature live performances by many of the shortlisted artists, culminating in the announcement of the 2022 Mercury Prize winners.

Arlo Parks was named the winner in 2021, she won the prestigious award for her debut album Collapsed In Sunbeams.
