SINGER Harry Styles has sparked controversy after claiming that depictions of gay sex in movies lack “endearment”.
The actor opened up about his role in the movie My Policeman in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
Filmed and set in Brighton, the film sees Harry in the role of a secret gay policeman in the 1950s, at a time when homosexuality was illegal.
The As It Was singer, however, sparked backlash after claiming that most film depictions of gay sex are “two guys getting on with it” and that the film’s director, Michael Grandage, wanted to show how sex is between two men really is.
He said: “So much of the gay sex in the film is from two guys and it kind of takes away from him the tenderness.
“I would imagine there will be some people watching it who were very much alive in that era when being gay was illegal and wanted to show Michael that it’s tender, loving and sensitive.”
However, the former One Direction star’s comments caused a stir on Twitter, when a user asked if he’d seen a number of LGBTQ+ films, including the Oscar-winning film Moonlight.
“Harry Styles, which casts queer films as ‘two guys going at it,’ to me is insane because most queer films are about tenderness and sadness and longing,” they said.
In his interview with the magazine, Harry said he didn’t see My Policeman simply as a “gay story,” but rather a story about love and “wasted time.”
He said: “It’s obviously quite unfathomable now to think that you couldn’t be gay – that was illegal.
“I think everyone, including me, has their own journey of exploring and becoming more comfortable with sexuality.
“It’s not like this is a gay story about these guys being gay. It’s about love and wasted time for me.”
My Policeman hits theaters on October 21st and will be available to stream on Amazon’s Prime Video service from November 4th.
