Hassocks FC prefers kick-offs to save energy

A senior non-league club from Sussex have brought forward kick-offs due to rising winter energy bills.

Hassocks have revealed several – but not all – home games will start at 2pm on Saturday after the clocks went back.

The first comes this Saturday when they host Bexhill at The Beacon.

The Southern Combination first-team says the move is “an attempt to ease the club’s significant financial burden from rising energy bills”.

Earlier starts during the winter months eliminate the need to turn on the floodlights during the second half of afternoon games.

A statement went on to say: “The use of floodlights has become increasingly expensive since the alarming rise in electricity prices.

“Admission prices went up slightly in the summer, but that doesn’t even scratch the surface.

“Reducing floodlight use as much as possible will help save money in times of real uncertainty, without having to pass the cost on to supporters by further raising the gate.”

Adults pay £7 to see Hassocks with children (and dogs) for free.

Several clubs are expected to push the games forward, although for now only Hassocks, Crawley Down Gatwick and Arundel are listed as the SCFL’s top two tiers starting next Saturday at 2pm.

All Isthmian League games involving Sussex sides on Saturday remain as things stand to start at 3pm.

However, non-league fans should get in the habit of checking kick-off times for afternoon games during the winter months.
