Hastings’ Marilyn Monroe lookalike receives death threats

A Marilyn Monroe lookalike has received death threats from online trolls because of her looks.

Hastings native Leylah Dobinson has amassed more than 21,000 followers on Instagram.

The 23-year-old model says she has always been inspired by Monroe’s natural beauty but has recently received negative comments calling her “fake” and a “narcissist” and even received death threats.

“It’s happened a number of times that unknown accounts text me saying ‘You deserve to be dead’ or ‘You’re ugly,'” she said.

“I don’t usually even open them. You feel so overwhelmed that someone could think this in their head and send this to you.

“But I do not mind. It just drives me to do more – without the haters I wouldn’t achieve anything anyway.

“You say those horrible words and it can affect you mentally. It’s not a pretty thing to read, but it just makes me stronger and makes me want to do better in life.

“It’s sad that it affects people and pulls them down when they receive this news.”

Leylah said she always dressed in heels and makeup from a young age, and her mother told her she could be the next Marilyn Monroe.

In 2014, she was crowned Hastings Carnival Queen and credits the success with fueling her love of being in the spotlight.

She started taking modeling more seriously in 2019 and got her first paid modeling shoot in 2020.

Leylah posts to her followers on Instagram, sharing model shots alongside pictures of her in Monroe’s signature styles.

She believes the hate messages she receives helped her further her modeling career.

“I’ve always been a pretty confident, strong-willed person, and when I got this news, I realized just how far I’ve come with my modeling – it irritates people, which I love, it annoys people, which means I’m get noticed,” she said.

“I think it’s also a jealousy thing. I got messages saying Marilyn was ugly. So when someone sees a beautiful person, they cannot say anything good because saying something negative makes them feel better.

“When you read horrible words you see it visually and you think how can someone say such horrible things to you, so yeah it upsets me in a way, but I’m just trying to let it get over my head.

“Personally, I feel sorry for the people who send them and I just want to say I wish them the best in life and ask what’s in it for them.” Hastings’ Marilyn Monroe lookalike receives death threats
