Hayden Panettiere has revealed that she became addicted to alcohol and opioids which put her in a “self-destructive cycle”.

In an interview with People magazine, the 32-year-old Heroes star said she had been given the “happy pill” since she was 15 years old before stepping onto the red carpet and that she had only recently “got over her addiction”. ” afterward.

Panettiere also reflects on her severe postpartum depression and how she had to make the difficult decision of sending her daughter to live with her ex-partner when she was at her lowest point.

The actress, who shot to stardom at the age of 11 after roles in soap operas and Remember the Titans, told the magazine that she was introduced to substances as a child star.

“They made me laugh in interviews,” she said.

“I didn’t know that this was not the right thing to do, or what doors would open for me when I was addicted.”

Her career continued to advance when she starred in the superhero TV series Heroes and the Nashville series.

Panettiere admits her “saving grace” is that she can’t be “messy” while on set but says things are “constantly spiraling out of control” outside of her job.

After giving birth to her daughter Kaya in 2014, whom she shares with ex-partner Wladimir Klitschko, she suffered from severe postpartum depression.

She admitted that despite seeking treatment, she continued to struggle and became increasingly dependent on alcohol.

Panettiere said this tested her relationship with Klitschko, who she said “didn’t want to be with” her anymore.

She added: “I don’t want to be around me. But with drugs and alcohol, I did anything to make me feel happy for a moment.

“After that, I felt worse than I did before. I am in a self-destructive cycle.”

In 2018, the actress decided to send her daughter to live with Klitschko in her homeland of Ukraine.

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” Panettiere said. But I want to be a good mom to her – and sometimes that means letting them go. “

Eventually, the actress was hospitalized with alcohol-induced jaundice, and doctors warned that her liver would “detox”.

She then went to rehab for eight months which she claims gave her the tools to “get over the hump” of her addiction but feels that she has only recently found peace again.

After taking a break from acting in recent years, Panettiere is now playing her famous character Kirby Reed in the next Scream movie.

The actress is also working for the Hoplon International charity she founded in March to help raise money for Ukraine after the Russian invasion.

Panettiere said her journey to sobriety has been “a lot of ups and downs” but says “I don’t regret even the ugliest things that happened to me. I feel extremely fulfilled. And I feel like I have a second chance.”

She added: “It’s a daily choice and I check in with myself all the time.

“But I am grateful to be back in this world, and I will never take it for granted again.”
