Haywards Heath Council called out ‘anti-farming’ over plant-based deposit

Rural activists have accused a council of “turning its back” on farmers after endorsing the crop-based contract.

The Countryside Alliance released a statement calling Haywards Heath City Council “anti-agriculture” after supporting the international treaty signed by Sir Paul McCartney.

The treaty calls for a transition to plant-based meals in schools and hospitals, but the alliance argues that red meat and dairy are important for a balanced diet.

Mo Metcalf-Fletcher, a spokesman for the group, said: “It is disappointing to see a local council becoming complicit in misinformation about the UK’s livestock farming, which is among the most sustainable in the world.

“Knowing where food comes from and how it’s produced is far more important than whether it’s animal or plant-based. The City Council should instead choose to engage with local farmers about their work to produce sustainable food while doing their part to protect and enhance our landscape.

“As it stands, they are open to being accused of being an anti-agriculture agency.”

The answer comes after former education minister Nadhim Zahawi stressed that “it is up to families to decide whether meat is part of their child’s diet” and backed the coalition.

However, the Council would like to emphasize that it is not directing residents to follow its proposals, but rather educating people about the existence of the treaty.

A spokesman for the council said: “We have not told anyone to go and do something, we have an environmental commitment and the City Council has brought this to people’s attention.

“It is that the city council decided to educate people about the possibilities and this way of life.

“The Council is not against anything, it embraces and welcomes everything.”
