‘He left a legacy of compassion and righteousness to mankind’ – Pierre Zakrzewski’s funeral to be held next week


The funeral of Pierre Zakrzewski, an Irish photojournalist who was killed in Ukraine on March 14, will take place next week.

Born in Paris to a French mother and Polish father, ierre Zakrzewski (55) was the second eldest of six children.

Mr. Zakrzewski’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 29 at 10am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Foxrock.

He Zakrzewski was killed by Russian shelling outside Kyiv on March 14.

Last week, Mr Zakrzewski’s widow, Michelle, traveled to Poland to meet with some of Pierre’s family and assist with repatriation efforts.

The obituary on RIP.ie says Mr Zakrzewski will be missed “indescribably” by his wife Michelle.

The message read: “Beloved son of Marie-Ange and the late Andrzej. Dear brother of sisters Zosia and Karola and brothers Stas, Greg and Nick.”

It said Mr. Zakrzewski “brought so much to us and gave everything to bring stories to the world. He left a legacy of compassion and action for humanity.”

Mr. Zakrzewski brought nothing but “fun, joy and laughter” to his family and especially to his nieces and nephews.

“Uncles to Clara, Lucie, Louise, Zoe, Juliette, Jake, Lola, Florence, Anna, Braedyn and Grayson to whom he has devoted so much time and brought nothing but fun, joy and laughter. Much missed by his sisters-in-law, dear friends, colleagues worldwide and extended family in Ireland, France, Poland and the UK.”

The message concluded: “Family flowers only. Donate, if desired, to the International Committee of the Red Cross.”

Mr Zakrzewski grew up in Leopardstown, Dublin, and was educated at St Conleth’s College. He later studied at UCD and Ballyfermot College of Further Education.

He has lived in London for the past 15 years with his wife Michelle, who works as a journalist for the BBC.

Mr Zakrzewski’s employers, Fox and Sky News, had worked with Irish, French and Polish officials to fly him back to Ireland.
